Quizzes - Open in New Window

Hi all

New member here. Still getting to grips with the workings of Canvas as we continue preparations to roll out the LMS later this year, so apologies if the below questions seem obvious or have already been answered (I did check prior to posting and couldn't find anything).

If we create a New Quiz via the Assignment menu, and select 'Quizzes 2' as an external tool, there is the option to specify whether or not the quiz should be opened in a new window when setting up the quiz.

However...

If you create a Quiz via the Quizzes menu the option to open in a new window is not available.

Is the above a bug or expected behaviour?

Why would going via the Assignments menu have the option to open the quiz in a new window, but going via the Quizzes menu does not have the option?

Should we be using the Quizzes 2 LTI option, or is the advice generally to now create quizzes just from the quizzes menu?

If the advice is not to use the Quizzes 2 LTI option, is it worth disabling this under external tools to limit confusion?

We just had an issue with our students not being able to access their New Quiz due to the New Quiz being set to open in a new tab. We have SSO authentication with Google, so it might have had something to do with how they were signed into their browser, but Canvas Support acknowledged it was an issue and changed via API the setting (new_tab=true) that was causing the issue. Using Canvas API we updated all courses to change the setting that indicates to open in a new tab to "false" for New Quiz assignments where it was "true". I would love to disable the option to add a New Quiz via the Add Assignment External Tool dropdown menu by choosing "Quizzes 2" that presents the instructor with the option to choose "Open in a new tab".  Do you know how to do that? I don't see it specifically in the External Apps.

I believe that you can configure what external tools are available. I found this archived post where @chriscas mentions that he was able to do this using the external tools API. I'm unsure whether or not this applies to the 'Quizzes 2' option within the external tools of assignments, but perhaps @chriscas could confirm, and whether or not this would have an impact on creating quizzes via the quizzes course menu.

Thanks, @Marc_C ! I was able to find that in the External Tools API. I'll have to try it out and do some testing to see it's impact. I muddle through APIs in Postman, but, fortunately, I have a teammate who rocks at this!
