Hey Canvas Community,

If you’ve been following along with the evolution of Enhanced Rubrics, you know this feature has been quite a journey from its first release to now. We’ve listened, learned, and refined, and today we’re reintroducing Enhanced Rubrics as the foundation for a smarter and more flexible evaluation experience in Canvas.

This update is about improving rubrics, but it will also unlock what comes next.

Why We Rebuilt Rubrics

Rubrics are one of the most powerful tools in Canvas - they help guide submission outcomes and feedback. But as teaching and learning evolved, it became clear that our original rubric tool needed to evolve, too.

Enhanced Rubrics were built to do just that: deliver a modern, intuitive, and scalable experience that supports today’s classrooms and tomorrow’s innovations.

Since its Feature Preview release in 2024, Enhanced Rubrics have become the key to unlocking other major features in Canvas, like AI Rubric Generation, Student Self Assessment, and future enhancements such as multi-rubric support.

To access all of those improvements, enabling Enhanced Rubrics is your first step.

What’s New and Improved?

We took everything you loved about rubrics and made it better.

A Refreshed + Modern Interface

The new design makes creating and managing rubrics more intuitive than ever. Cleaner layouts, better visibility, and improved usability mean you can spend less time clicking and more time teaching.

New Creation and Edit Experience

  • Drag and drop criteria and ratings to organize with ease

  • Refined traditional view: The classic rubric grid now features a clean, consistent layout that aligns beautifully for a smoother grading experience.

Smarter Organization

A redesigned Rubric Index Page makes it easy to see where rubrics are in use and manage them at the course level.

Greater Control and Customization

Enhanced Rubrics give instructors new flexibility with:

  • Default settings for scored or unscored rubrics

  • Options to reorder ratings or criteria
  • Criterion alignment with outcomes

  • Edit points when creating rubrics from outcomes
  • Direct access to rubrics in the Assignment Details Page

Better Feedback. Better Experiences.

Enhanced Rubrics also bring a smoother, more personalized grading experience—both for instructors and students.

  • Performance and Usability Updates for SpeedGrader now include a selector for traditional, vertical, or horizontal views, significantly reducing scrolling

  • RCE-Lite integration enhances how you leave comments and feedback.
  • Unsaved changes warnings prevent accidental data loss when grading in SpeedGrader.

  • Student Self Assessment helps learners reflect and engage with their progress.
  • Rubric data imports and exports directly from the Gradebook for easier management.

Built on Feedback

The Enhanced Rubrics you see today are the direct result of community input from the Feature Preview phase, initially launched in July of 2024. Educators, admins, and instructional designers who participated in early testing and adoption helped to further shape its design, performance, and usability. End user feedback has led to major refinements like improved responsiveness, better SpeedGrader integration, and simplified rubric creation tools.

And we’re not stopping there. We’ve recently released critical bug fixes and performance improvements identified during testing, improving the overall experience based on your feedback.

Ready to Get Started?

The Enhanced Rubrics feature flag is currently available in Feature Preview and can be enabled at the account or course level. This feature is planned to go to ‘General Availability’ in 2026, meaning the feature flag will default to ‘on’ for all users.

And what’s even better? No migration is needed. Once you enable the feature flag within an account or course, your existing rubrics will be updated to the Enhanced Rubrics interface automatically.

Enhanced Rubrics have come a long way since their first release and they’re ready to take your assessment experience to the next level. Thank you to everyone who’s shared feedback, tested features, and helped shape this journey.

We can’t wait for you to see what’s next.

@YasiAfsharnive , I am a big  fan of Enhanced Rubrics.  I just have a quick question.  You stated that the feature flag will default to ‘on’ for all users in March 2026.  Will users still have the ability to disable the feature if it is left unlocked, or will Enhanced Rubrics become the only experience available?

@leward Great question. The Feature Flag will default to 'on' but you can still turn it off if you wish!

I love using the enhanced rubrics. One of my favorite features is how much easier it is to find existing rubrics for assignments. Is there any plan to use the same Find Rubric workflow for Discussions? It's so easy now to find one for an assignment but for Discussions, it is still the previous workflow and not as intuitive. It's also now difficult to explain to faculty as an admin that there are two processes now. Thanks!

Great point, @RachelSalmon .  One of the reasons we've been reluctant to enable enhanced rubrics is the fact that the old interface still shows up in Discussions and Classic Quizzes.  Hopefully that will be addressed soon.

@RachelSalmon @leward Absolutely, supporting enhanced rubrics for discussions and quizzes is on our roadmap for the future. Happy to hear you like the feature!

@YasiAfsharnive - thanks for sharing this! The "Find a Rubric Workflow" IS actually better! I share the previous commenters concerns though that it is problematic to have a separate workflow for Discussions.

I have some users who have a huge number of rubrics, both at the account level and course level. They have recently shared with me that it would be helpful if users could create *categories* for rubrics on the rubrics index page, and that those categories would also be visible in the "Find a Rubric" workflow

@mbmacdonald That's a fantastic idea! I will definitely share with the team, thank you!

@YasiAfsharnive - any chance that when enhanced rubrics come to discussions that the rubrics could be shown on the discussion, vs. students having to click on "view rubric"?
