I agree with your response: "Why do I now have to make an additional click to open a separate screen to set a due date?"

Canvas recently heard our feedback and they have plans to add the due date and assign to field back to the editing page instead of it popping out from the right. They have yet to say when they will make it back, but here is an article about it.
