This idea is to give instructors the ability to filter the student list in the gradebook by the amount of time they spent on a given assessment from the sort by option available from the grade column drop down menu (please see screenshot for reference). It would be helpful to filter the gradebook columns by the extremes – by those who used the most time on a given assessment and those who used the least time. This would be a great way for instructors teaching high enrollment courses (100 + students) – and smaller enrollment courses as well - to be able to easily identify students who, for example, performed poorly on an assessment and spent very little time on it compared to other students. Let me provide an example: Student A scores poorly on the assessment and spent the least amount of time out of all students who took the assessment. Student B also scores poorly on the same assessment, and spent the most amount of time out of all the students who took the assessment. Being able to filter by time spent on the assessment gives instructors the ability to easily identify these different, struggling student populations and help develop a more informed plan on bringing those students up to speed. ... The idea is to sort the student list in the People page by Total Activity (see screenshot for reference) – to ultimately identify those who have spent the shortest amount of time in the course. Image showing the People page, indicating that the Total Activity header could be used to sort the student list Please keep in mind, I fully understand these points: • Total Activity is not meant to be a fully accurate measure of their activity • Some students don’t need to spend as much time in the course to do as well as others • Students can technically spend time working on the course and it not be counted (e.g. reading a PDF or PowerPoint lecture slide they’ve downloaded onto their machine) However, in a rigorous course that leverages many Canvas features (exams, both practice and graded modular quizzes, and content pages), Total Activity can be used in concert with grade performance to track retention and thus provide opportunities for intervention during the course to more effectively scaffold student learning. Feature Idea: Pull how long each student took on their quiz attempt in a list, either via the student analysis report or by some other means (e.g. New Analytics). Reasoning: Getting assessments developed the right way in a course is often an iterative process, the more reporting that can be pulled on any given assessment does nothing but help an instructor better develop it for future semesters. The ability to pull a list of how long students are taking on quiz attempts (and being able to sort this list) would give an instructor a key metric when evaluating whether they are giving their students the right amount of time to take on an exam, or even if the material presented in the assessment is too difficult. As is particularly the case with larger course sites, drilling down to each individual student isn't a good use of time and the "average time spent" provided in the quiz statistics isn't specific enough to be helpful.  ... I'm building an ungraded survey for the instructor, but I'm not sure what reporting they'll have access to.  According to the Once I publish a quiz, what kinds of quiz statistics are available? article, it states that item analysis isn't available for surveys. I've received a few complaints from instructors about the Canvas inbox filters. Specifically, the inability to set their inbox to only show incoming messages for a course or courses during the semester they are currently teaching. While in the inbox, they have the ability to filter incoming messages by course, but there's no apparent way to get that course to "stick" so when they come back to the inbox, it stays on that course. This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas Existing behavior: When an instructor exports the gradebook, the order of the grade columns are ordered by the time when they were created.   Desired behavior: When an instructor exports the gradebook into a spreadsheet the order of the grade columns reflect the gradebook order in Canvas.   I was very surprised that the gradebook order isn't reflected in the exported file. One major concern is that there's no way to tell what the column order is going to be, since the order of the columns goes by Assignment ID, which isn't visible in the Canvas gradebook (and instructors won't remember what the order they created columns in a given course). For an instructor with 20+ grade columns, this becomes a problem when they download the gradebook to aggregate or analyze student information.   It's not a good practice to assume instructors will create their graded assignments in the order in which they would like to view the graded assignments in the gradebook export file. Rather, it makes much more sense for the gradebook export file to reflect the gradebook column order the instructor specifically chose in their Canvas course.  ... View more

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas It's possible this has been addressed in the new Quizzes.Next feature, but there aren't any guides I can find mentioning any expansion of the quiz response settings in the new quizzes feature and I haven't found these settings myself either. With the current version of quizzes, the settings in the image directly below the quiz should indicate it is locked down so students shouldn't be able to figure out what the correct answers are until May 17th at 12:00 am However, with the setting above students can see that they scored full points on a question and what their answer was. This is essentially the same thing as showing them that they chose the correct answer, since it shows them how many points the question is out of and what they scored [1] in addition to what answer they chose [2]. The default should be if an instructor doesn't want students to see the correct answers until a certain time, students shouldn't be able to see what they scored on a question and see what answer option they provided on a question. I can see this sabotaging quizzes that have more than one attempt, since students will be able to go back into the first attempt and pull out which questions they received credit for. Ultimately the concern here is it has forced instructors into a binary choice. Either they choose the "Let Students See Their Quiz Responses" option and provide more information than they are comfortable showing students OR they leave that option unchecked and leave their students out in the dark out of concern for the integrity of their questions. If Canvas quizzes can have a second feedback date layer offering more security to their questions, more instructors will be able to open up different layers of their quiz at different times to provide the best learning experience for their students.
