The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.
In the new gradebook, teachers can flag assignments as late or missing. However, this has to be done student by student. It would be much more efficient if teachers could fill multiple students' scores as late or missing using "set default grade". For example, an instructor gives students grades on an assignment, but several scores are left empty. If the instructor wants to give each remaining blank score a "missing" status, they need to tag each of these one-by-one. If teachers in this situation could use "set default grade" and mark each ungraded assignment as missing all at once, it would save instructors substantial time.
Have you leveraged the new 'missing/late policy' to have these done automagically for you? https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-13947-73553826328
The missing submission policy is great, but from what I have seen, the
missing tag still needs to be applied manually per student (for on paper
submissions).

That is correct, because there is no assignment submission trigger for the system to know if an assignment is actually late or not. We wouldn't want to mark assignments late that a teacher has collected and hasn't entered grades for yet.
So sorry I was not clear when I used the phrase "manually per student". I
don't want an auto-update, but rather the ability to assign this tag to
multiple students at the same time (like the set default grade feature).

I agree! During conversations with colleagues, we've talked about how nice it would be if there was a way to set the default status, especially for assignments turned in on paper. If we could add a "Bulk Status Update" feature in the New Gradebook, it would be great, and it would save a lot of clicks, depending on the grading task! (A great spot would be right under Set Default Grade.)
I would like to be able to bulk enter all of the possible choices under set default grade. For me "ex" would be useful. Sometimes I collect something from only one section, or only one subset of students. I'd love to enter their grades, and then bulk excuse the remainder of the students.
Hello @Renee_Carney ,
I am a bit confused by this thread.
Am I to understand that if a 'late policy' is not set up in the New Gradebook, that the late/missing labels will not display? If so, that makes me very happy - as I do not want those labels showing up. However, it was my understanding that the New Gradebook assigns late/missing automatically, based on the assignment due date (please see https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/10605-a-global-option-to-enabledisable-missing-and-late-status... ). I just received notice that my institution will be switching over to the New Gradebook soon. I am concerned because my course structure allows students to choose from a number of assignments within an assignment group, making those not-done assignments neither later nor missing. Thank you.
Hi Kimberly,
The intent of this thread is for "on-paper" assignments or "no-submission" assignments. These assignments do not get late/missing labels automatically, because they are not submitted electronically. What I'm hoping to be able to do is to quickly mark any empty cell as "missing", just like "set default grade" would do with a numeric score.
What you're asking about (I think) relates to online submissions for which Canvas automatically marks as missing if there is no submission. Perhaps @Renee Carney can offer more clarification on how you can set up your late and missing policies to get the result you want?
Best,
Barbara
I agree, If there was a simple programming fix in the "set default grade" where you could put an m to mark as missing and put in a default grade of your choice, that would be ideal! In the same place, programming it so that you could enter an e or x for excused would be great too! I have used other gradebooks that have used this feature, or even allow you to type in the "m" or "x" and automatically counting for your setting and it is so unbelievably useful. Please consider adding this feature to the gradebook.
Not surprised to a) see this as a missing feature on Canvas and b) find a well supported, 2-year old requested, unfulfilled by Instructure
If you are looking to do this. Here is a method.
As long as you are using due dates, you can do this in bulk if you use the "Total" column instead of the individual assignment.
Then, if graded at the due date with this method, any future submission will be automatically labeled as late after the submission.
The total column is at the end of the grade book unless you move it to the front with the settings button of that column. (Picture 1)
From this settings menu, you can also "Apply Score to Ungraded" --> Within that subsetting is where you can apply a bulk percentage score and mark it as missing. (Picture 2)
This will only affect the assignments that have a lapsed due date and no score given. Even better, if the "Late Policies" is set, it will not affect those items. I use it for the Google assignments that mark them as missing, but won't apply the late policy percent.
Although I'm not enthused that I'm now replying to a thread that is nearly six years old, I am BEGGING for this update to happen. It would be so simple to add a button to the default grade for each assignment. Talking to colleagues, all have expressed the same annoyance that we have to click missing individually for each student with a missing assignment. I have tried using the "automatically assign as zero / missing" gradebook setting, but that doesn't work for on paper assignments and it causes another problem: When my students turn something in late (4 minutes or 4 days), it keeps their score as zero and I have to go back and delete the zero before they see the change. This causes problems for assignments that are not quick and easy to grade (like student essays).
Every colleague I have spoken to agrees that this is a major nuisance for our grading to not have this feature. Please fix this ASAP!
Yes! Adding to this.
It would be useful to have an option to BULK change the assignment submission status (ie, LATE to None) without changing the assignment due date.
One of the LTI tools we use has a grade book sync, but if the instructor sync's manually, Canvas recognizes that as Late.
The LTI company is aware.
So, we can now do this a couple of ways.
1. If you type mi into the "set default grade" option, it will change everything that does not have a score to missing. You can then go back to "set default grade" and type in 0. It will not change the missing status.
2. If you want every score to automatically be 0%, 50%, or any other value for all assignments that are missing, you can go to settings and click the box that says "Automatically apply grade for missing submissions" and put the percentage that you would like it to input any time there is a missing assignment. Then just do the first step of method 1: type mi into the "set default grade" option, it will change everything that does not have a score to missing.
Hope this helps!
Thanks for the tip on #1. That is a helpful tip that does cut down on the time of manually entering every missing tag.
I'm aware of the second one, but that only helps if you're completely caught up on all grading--otherwise it will put zero and missing for assignments that are upcoming or presently ungraded. For that reason, this feature has been useless to me in actual practice.
However, I hope Canvas understands that it just wouldn't be hard for them to add a check mark toggle button for Missing on the set default grade option (or even better: one at the top of the column above each assignment). It feels silly to think that going to set default grade twice to complete one task is the most efficient for teachers.
Still, thank you for the tip. I'll share with others and hope Canvas makes it even smoother in the near future.
