How can I enter annotations in student papers in the SpeedGrader but hide the feedback until all of the papers have been reviewed?

Hi  @jlivingston ,

The "mute assignments" feature is what you need to turn on. Once muted, students cannot see grades or feedback on assignments until you unmute it. Here are a couple guides on how to turn it on (or off) from Speedgrader or the Gradebook:

Unfortunately, this no longer appears to work in the new Gradebook. Grades are hidden but not annotations or sidebar comments. Is there a way to hide the entire assignment (grades/annotations/comments) in the new Gradebook?

Okay, I spoke with Tier 1 Canvas support, and we tested out a few things. Apparently whenever you post a new comment in the Speedgrader, all comments become visible (at least for that student) even if the grade has previously been set to “hidden.” However, if after posting your comment, you then manually “Hide” the column once again (despite already being in “hidden” status), it then hides the comments from students.

We tested it out in a demo course, and this workflow seems to work. It’s convoluted, but it does seem to work.

Need to be able to do this for a subset of students in a course section that are already "grouped" by instructor within a course with multiple instructors.

The best way to set up a single assignment with different settings for different groups is to duplicate the assignment, and assign the duplicate to the second group of students.  So group 1 (or section 1) is assigned to the first copy, that isn't hidden, and group/section 2 is assigned to the second copy, which is.

Is this still the only method available for hiding Speedgrader annoations until you're ready to post them to the entire class?

It sounds more like a workaround for a broken feature than the way anything is actually supposed to work.

Let me get this straight, if I have a class of 30 students, I first have to hide the grades. Then, for each student, after I've written comments, I have to hide the grades again? Once again, Canvas does not disappoint.

Oh, fun fact, while trying to post this, "An Unexpected Error has Occurred". Sheesh.

Hi @mprogers,

Grades and comments are currently somewhat tied together in Canvas.  If you don't want students seeing grades or feedback as you enter them, you can change the grade posting policy for the assignment to "manual".  Once you do that, any future grades/comments you make on that assignment should be hidden.  When you're ready for students to see the grade and feedback, you can then post the grades.
