Canvas and Mastery are experiencing issues due to an ongoing AWS incident. Follow the status at AWS Health Dashboard and Instructure Status Page
For example, I am trying to embed video from Canvas studio into a course and the student view just shows a "Launch External Tool" button. And then it takes you to the video. If I upload the video to youtube and embed it, it plays right within the app.
I like the ease (mainly for many of my non-techy teachers in my building) of using Canvas studio, but without it playing directly in the app I will need to look at them uploading to youtube instead.
Thoughts or work arounds?
Any ideas?
Hi Jared - That's a really good question, especially with Studio. I'll share your question with a few people, and hopefully we'll both gain some insight about this behavior in the Canvas Student app.
I too am encountering this issue, but only on a page. I tried embedding a studio video into a discussion and it appears just right. But I can't get it to show the preview on a page - it only shows a button to Launch External Tool.
I also have the same problem.
Are there any plans to fix this on the next update?
I see that this is still an issue...? On my computer (web version of Canvas), I can see the preview of the video, so it's clear that it's there. For students, they only see the Launch External Tool button on their Canvas app. It isn't obvious to them that there is a video hiding there, and I recently realized that many of them didn't even know there WERE videos of lectures they had missed. I'm not too excited about re-linking every single video as a YouTube link instead; besides, that way they are subjected to ads.
Does anyone know if a workaround was found for this? We are having the same issue
Android app users video from external tool displays fine
Apple app users a launch external tool message appears
Hi @jared_callis. Thank you for the idea!
I have good news. We are currently working on the Studio video embedding. Studio videos will appear embedded in the content and no need to leave the app to watch them. The release comes soon.

Hi @jozsefdavid,
I am sorry to hijack this thread slightly, but I just saw your comment and would like to know if this will apply to all 3rd party video tools or is the fix just for Canvas Studio? We are a Kaltura school and the presentation of the "Launch external tool" button in the app in place of embedded videos has frustrated our users for years now. Any info you are able to provide would be greatly appreciated!
-Chris
Hi @chriscas, don't be sorry, that is a very good question. In this round it applies only to the Studio LTI tool and no other ones unfortunately.
Hi @jozsefdavid do you know when the next round is scheduled? We use Kaltura and as a partner hope it will be soon.
Hi @marita_bird .
We are currently investigating our options, so there is no decision made yet and I can't say anything closer. It is definitely on the table. I'll reach out to you separately to learn more about your use cases.
Thank you!
Jozsef
