Grade Not Showing Up

One of my students has an assignment that was turned in on time and graded but the little paper icon shows up with a light green background  instead of the grade.  How can I fix that?

Hi  @manna1  Welcome to the Canvas Community. That's a good question and is the result of a somewhat interesting set of circumstances, although not all that unusual.  It sounds like you are using the New Gradebook from the color described and here is exactly what happened:

• The student submitted the assignment.
• You graded it.
• The student re-submitted the assignment, either not realizing s/he submitted it earlier (unlikely) or caught something on the original submission and therefore re-submitted it.  And yes, this CAN be done even on an assignment that has already been graded.

By default, the green color represents a re-submitted assignment in the New Gradebook.(Yes, it would not be my first color choice, either....but that can be fixed.  This is described here ( How do I use the icons and colors in the New Gradebook? ) and can be changed by following this online lesson: How do I change the color for a grading status in the New Gradebook? .  

By default, students can always re-submit an assignment in Canvas unless you take the precaution of setting an Until date for an online assignment.  Be sure to check here for more information:  https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-10327-415273044   I often describe the Until date to faculty at my own institution as the "drop dead due date."  (Perhaps I should come up with a nicer-sounding term.....)  But anyway, that is the date upon which you will no longer accept late submissions.

So basically, you will either have to grade the new submission or explain to the student somehow that since it was already graded you will not accept a re-submission.  But I guess chalk it up to Canvas experience and learn how to avoid a similar situation in the future.

Hi Ken - I also had this problem and I did enter in the new grade. But it still has the same icon showing and not the grade.  When I 'click' on the paper icon, it does show the points awarded.  I just want to make sure that the points are being counted even if they are not visible.

Hello there, @StephenFiore ...

Ken is no longer in the Community helping respond to questions [see his letter here if you'd like to read more...  A Fond Farewell to the Community for Now - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com)], so I'll try and take a stab at this for you.  If you go to the SpeedGrader for the particular assignment you are trying to grade, select the student you want to grade.  Then, on the right side of the student's SpeedGrader screen, somewhere you might see a link that says, "Use this same grade for the resubmission".  You'll need to click on this link.  When you return to your Gradebook, the score should now show up instead of seeing the paper icon you had seen before.

I have the same issue. I don;t want to change the status and I have graded. Some are resubmissions and some are late. I keep having to double check them to be sure that I graded that assignment. @canvas please fix this. Once I grade it, whether it's late or not it should then show. When I click on it it shows the grade.

I grade late submissions all of the time. I know when I have a new submission to grade because it shows up in my "To Do List." I just click on that Assignment in my "To Do List." That takes me straight to the student's submission in SpeedGrader. After I enter the score in SpeedGrader, the grade automatically appears in the Gradebook (and it is still highlighted as a "late" submission).

I never scan the Gradebook looking for submissions to grade. Instead, I rely on my "To Do List." That method has worked really well for me.

I have a similar problem where the assignment was graded and the icon shows up covering the grade. When I click on the icon, it shows the points awarded. I assumed that the grades were being tabulated in the final grade. However, I find that the grade is not being counted towards the total grade. What is going on here?
