[Gradebook] Give instructor access to the Grading History after the course ends

Currently, once a course reaches its end date for instructor access, instructors no longer have access to the grading history in the course.  According to support, this is intended behavior because the Instructors are only set to have access to make changes in their courses until the end of the term date.  There are situations where instructors need to review the grading history for grade challenges and grade changes, but currently cannot without the admin changing the Teacher end date setting.

This is one reason why we conclude courses 90 days after term end.  It would be preferred to tighten this up when it is possible as this can lead to longer lists of visible courses and groups.

This is URGENT!!!

If a grade is disputed, or there's an Incomplete, we need access to the grades and to all quiz or assignment information.

Other LMS packages have this feature - it should be doable and should be made a priority.

Agree that this is very important, because in the end the reliability of the grades depends on it.  Also, for disputes about grades, if you have to defend the basic marks uploaded, the instructor for the course does not have access to the grading history at present beyond some trivial number of grade entries, even while the course is still live. This is not a bug as it was designed this way, but seems like such a basic requirement too.  If you are interested there is an idea open for voting, see: .

As often with such things, it doesn't seem important until you realise it's missing and then it's too late;).

Can it be confirmed that instructors can in fact view the grade history of concluded courses?

  1. select People
  2. select View Prior Enrollments
  3. select student name link
  4. select Grades
  5. this bring up the 'Grades for.. Student Name' view (all feedback, rubric, etc. visible).

I followed these steps while Masquerading as an instructor, viewing a concluded course listed under her Past Enrollments.

Currently we do not check the box in Settings:  Users can only participate in the course between these dates.  Would checking that limit the access shown above?

We will definitely be keeping this type of permissioning in mind in the future, but we aren't going to be able to tackle this in the short term. I'm going to have to archive this idea for now.

I agree that this should be a priority, and it seems like it should be a simple change to institute. Under the current settings of Canvas, if a student has an incomplete grade and submits work after the "course end date" or if a student challenges the grading of an assignment and the instructor agrees to change the grade, there is no way to make that change in Canvas. It's frustrating for an instructor to have to manually compute grades and then not even be able to save the revised grades in Canvas. Over time this can become confusing because if something comes up after the manual computation of grades, the instructor will have to remember to consult an "off the books" grade book instead of the one that is frozen in Canvas.

For this reason we conclude courses 45 days after the term end date.

i believe it would also be helpful if a student could view thier own history, say for atleast the previous term?
