As an instructor for a freshman orientation class, I often pull up Canvas on the projector to show students how to navigate it, where to turn in assignments, read over assignment descriptions, etc. I'm often nervous that I might unwittingly click the "Grades" tab and project all the students' grades for the whole class to see. This is also true when I'm using Canvas for individual student meetings.
I think it would be helpful if when you select the "Grades" tab in a course shell, that the grades are hidden, and you have to click a "Show Grades" button to reveal them. This way, if an instructor does click the "Grades" tab when using Canvas in class, students' grades are not automatically revealed. If instructors don't like this extra step every time they are viewing grades, there could possibly be a "Always show grades" selection next to the "Show Grades" button or in Settings? I think this could add an extra level of protection for student grades and FERPA.
