[New Quizzes] Export to or Share in Commons

This idea has been developed and is On Canvas Beta •  How do I access the Canvas beta environment?

For more information, please read through the Commons Release Notes (2025-01-18)

Problem statement:

Current Instructure documentation states that New Quizzes cannot be imported from Canvas Commons (source: https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Canvas-Commons/How-do-I-import-and-view-a-Commons-resource-in-Can....) This limits the usefulness of both New Quizzes and Commons to not be able to share these specific resource types there.

Proposed solution:

New Quizzes and Canvas Commons should be fully compatible. Instructors should be able to share New Quizzes to Commons and then also import items from Commons that contain New Quizzes.

User role(s):

The error I receive when I open the Quiz is "Couldn't find valid settings for this link".

@KeithConsol My response was based on the feature comparison document (Canvas New Quizzes Feature Comparison) but I'll do some additional checking.

Thank you!  I probably have over 60 unique quizzes in the New Quiz format in about 10 different courses.  I never thought I'd have to create them.  I still have access to the Canvas instance we used last year.

@KeithConsol  We're still looking into this, Keith. Would you provide us with the case number for your support interaction?

Thank you for the update.  There are other instructors in my school with the same issue.

@KeithConsol

I've reached out to one of our engineers about this. Looks like you have multiple accounts in different regions, which does seem to be an issue. Thanks for your support case as it will be helpful for investigating.

Thank you! If there is any information I can provide, let me know.  If you need specific course numbers, let me know.

Thanks to everyone for your patience, and a special thank you to @KeithConsol for helping us with this. We've placed this idea into Moderating status for the moment, and here's why. When an instructor's accounts are in the same region, they can export courses containing New Quizzes and export them into a different instance successfully. However, as noted here, the process will throw errors when a course is exported from one region and the instructor attempts to import to an account in a different region.

We've escalated  @KeithConsol 's case to our engineers for further investigation. As that process unfolds, we're going to keep this idea in Moderating status.

In the meantime, if you're experiencing difficulty importing a course export that includes New Quizzes, please reach out to Canvas Support; if it turns out that the issue involves migration across multiple regions, they'll attach your case to the engineering ticket we have associated with this, and you'll receive direct updates on its progress.

Thank you!  I did receive this response to my Canvas case.  How will I receive updates?  Will updates be posted to this forum?  Or when my ticket is closed?  I'm going to have to start copy / pasting my quizzes from one instance to the new instance manually.  If at some point, this is no longer needed, I would like to know.  Thanks for the excellent service and communication.

I understand that you cannot migrate new quizzes when you moved the course from one school to another.

Please note you can export your Classic Quizzes from Canvas as QTI zipped file and import it through the Build tab on New Quizzes.

However, you cannot export New Quizzes or import them. Unfortunately, there is no workaround you need to recreate them, I do apologize for the inconvenience.

If you have any other Canvas questions or concerns, please feel free to contact us or check out our Canvas Guides!
