[New Quizzes] Partial Credit for "Matching", "Categorization", and "Sorting" question types in Quizzes.Next tool

Comments from Instructure

The  Canvas Release Notes (2022-01-15) includes partial credit options for matching questions in New Quizzes. Please refer to  New Quizzes: Partial Credit for Matching Questions .

The Quizzes.Next assignment questions type "Categorization", "Matching", and "Sorting" currently don't allow for partial credit to be given.  In order to pacify my students and to give credit were credit is due I'm currently manually adjusting the scores on these questions. Very tedious!

Thus, I would appreciate if the Canvas team would add the option for partial credit to added to these three assignment question types.

E.G.:
if a question has 2 categories and a total of 10 points, a student that would answers one of the two categories correctly would get 5 points.
if a "Sorting" question has 5 sort items and 10 points overall, a student that sorts 3 out of the 5 items correctly would receive 6 points (3/5*10)

if a "Matching" question has 3 items and 10 points overall, a student that would get 2 out of the 3 items matched correctly would receive 6.67 points (2/3 * 10)

Problem statement:

The Categorization questions already mark which items are correct/incorrect. Why is the system unable to award partial credit? This type of question can be valuable in comparing similar concepts/processes. However, the lack of partial credit is frustrating to students and is a waste of an instructor's time if done manually. It has been 5+ years since this was first mentioned in the community. But it seems that that thread is now considered resolved since partial credit for the other types of questions (matching and sorting) has been implemented.

Proposed solution:

Enable Canvas to award partial credit for categorization questions.

Problem statement:

I created a Canvas quiz using the New Quizzes. I asked my students to sort 12 items into 5 categories. If they missed 1 of the items, Canvas marked the whole question wrong with no partial credit. There is no way to allow partial credit. This is a pain!

Proposed solution:

I suggest the New Canvas Quizzes allow partial credit for Categorization questions. There should be a checkbox for "Allow partial credit" when the teacher creates the quiz. Each item to be categorized counts an equal amount in partial credit. That includes distractors.

Problem statement:

The "Matching" question type offers the "Partial Credit" grading option. However, the Categorization question type does not. This greatly limits how these types of questions can be utilized within the New Quizzes tool.

Proposed solution:

Add the "grading" options for both Partial & Exact Match to the Categorization question type in Canvas New Quizzes.

Problem statement:

Currently, professors are unable to award partial credit to the categorization and sorting questions on canvas quizzes. Partial credit in categorization and sorting questions allows students to receive points for partially correct answers, reflecting their understanding even if they make some errors. For example, in an exam where students choose from multiple options, if they get 3 out of 4 correct, then they should be awarded 0.75 points to reflect their understanding more accurately.

Proposed solution:

I propose awarding partial credit based on the number of correct items in categorization and sorting questions to more accurately reflect students' understanding of the question and prevent penalization for minor mistakes.
