Pages, Wiki Pages, Content Pages -- Need Consistent Naming in Canvas

This idea has been developed and deployed to Canvas

Idea will be open for vote Wed. June 3, 2015 - Wed. September 2, 2015  Learn more about voting...

Faculty get so confused because Pages=Wiki Pages=Content Page depending on what you are looking at in Canvas.  Can't everything just be names PAGES so everyone knows they are the same thing and keep it simple?

Hi  @davidnas

We appreciate your pushback here.  This is a tricky idea, as it probably never should have moved forward for voting as is. This idea is marked as complete, even though you may find a few stragglers (as you have) of terminology that is still hiding! In fact, we found some recently too!

In the Canvas Production Release Notes (2016-08-27) the corrections were specifically

In the Rich Content Editor sidebar Links tab, the Wiki Pages link has been renamed to Pages. This update helps align terminology throughout Canvas. Additionally, pagination in each content section has been increased from 10 to 50 content items.

Most Recently, in the Canvas Production Release Notes (2016-11-19) you will see updates as of

Wiki Terminology Update

To help with consistency throughout Canvas, Pages terminology has been changed from wiki to page(s) in the following locations:

  • Course Settings Details tab: The last option reads Only Teachers can create, rename, and edit course pages by default.
  • Modules: Add Module Item, Add Page. The drop-down list of items to add to a module includes pages instead of wiki.
  • Permissions: The Manage (add / edit / delete) wiki permission displays pages instead of wiki.

I'll pass on the 2 areas noted by  @michael_mccormi

Thanks.

Just to note... the two that Michael mentioned and the one that Kelley points out have been pointed out several times before now in the comments.  As such, it hard to understand how these can be considered "stragglers."

Hi, Michael,

About your mention of modules and edit content not being updated:

The Rich Content Editor change was already addressed as part of the Rich Content Editor Sidebar feature option mentioned in the Canvas Production Release Notes (2016-08-27). However, the feature option was later hidden because of some questionable behaviors that are being resolved by our engineering team. So now what you are seeing right now is the old (current) sidebar, where existing functionality will not be addressed. The Rich Content Editor Sidebar feature option should be coming back out soon.

In regard to Modules, the main goal was to remove reference of wiki. There are still inconsistencies between the use of page and content page, as page can also be a generic reference (such as the Assignments page). Some references of content page are to help you be able to differentiate between the type of page being added. Our product managers need to review terminology as compared to these references and we can make some additional adjustments.

Thanks,

Erin
