Parents are reporting that they see a Lock symbol on the top left of course cards on the iOS app. Last year they were able to see the student's total grade, but this year it is a lock. I cannot figure out where to change this. Neither can ChatGPT.
The one major change from last year to this year is the fact that all our courses are having a Blueprint applied.
I have double checked settings against last year's courses, and all are identical as far as I can tell.
How do I get the grade to show on the course card so parents can get a quick view of the grades for their children?
The lock signifies that final grades in the course site are hidden from students. There is a setting within the course to try looking at. Go to the course, then down to Settings. Scroll all the way to the bottom. There is a series of checkboxes at the bottom. If you do not see those, you may see an option for "More Options". Either way, look for a checkbox that says Hide totals in student grades summary and uncheck it. Then save the settings and see if that fixes it for the parents.
Thanks for the reply. I have verified that the setting was unchecked and never was checked, yet parents are still reporting the issue.
I do believe it is possible for Blueprint course settings to override a teacher's course settings, but I am less familiar with the process of setting up blueprint courses. That can include the setting in question here. You might talk with whomever set up the Blueprint course in your district and see if they left that setting turned on.
Maybe someone with more experience implementing Blueprint Courses might be able to comment here to assist.
@jpastorek Course settings can get applied through Blueprints but only once -- on subsequent syncs you'll need to explicitly tell the blueprint to sync course settings. Teachers can also override course settings after a blueprint; course settings is one of the items that can't be locked down through a blueprint sync.
Just curious, I'm wondering if this issue with total grades is related to this known issue?
I have confirmed that there is no setting checked for Hiding any sorts of grades in any course, sub-account, or root-level account. This is happening on current courses within the current term.
I contacted Canvas support, and they told me that they can see the grades while using the parent app. The support tech told me to ensure the parents are using the Parent App on iOS.
However, this morning another parent emailed me saying that they cannot see the grades. I asked the parent to send screenshots of evidence that they are using the Parent App and that they cannot see. This is beyond frustrating.
I see the link Melody shared for a known issue. It sounds exactly like what you are experiencing. You might respond to Tech Support with a link to that issue so you can get tagged for any updates.
I saw it says NA on the dashboard view in your screenshots. This USUALLY means that the instructor has not released the grades yet (such as they do manually posted grades and have not posted it yet). Assuming this is not true in your situation since it sounds like you have not changed settings since last year, it likely is because of the other issue that it says NA. Just for your reference on what NA would normally mean.
Hi @jpastorek It sounds like the issue might be happening because parents and observers are using the main Canvas app instead of the Canvas Parent app. To fix this, the best solution is for them to use the Canvas Parent app.
