Why doesn't Canvas have a way for case managers to manage accommodations/modifications at the account level? It seems inefficient for multiple teachers to have to go in and manager each individual student.

By "case managers", I believe you are referring to Instructure's technical support agents. Please correct me if I am wrong.

Case managers do not have the ability to do this because (in theory) individual schools, courses, and/or teachers could have different views whether someone else (whether a case manager or a school's own technical support people or Canvas admins) and give some an additional attempt, more time, and/or change due or until dates.

At my school, I am the highest level Canvas admin and I do not make those types of changes without consulting with a teacher and typically only if they are not able to do it (they might not be in the office or at a computer).

I am actually referring to special education teachers who serve as case managers for students with IEPs.

Thank you for clarifying that.

Technically (and the process will vary depending on your institution's structure and policies), it would be possible.

In short, from a Canvas perspective, it would require:

1. creating a role in Canvas and settings up its permissions
2. creating a section in the course that would be meant for only that student
3. enrolling the student into that specific section
4. enrolling the case manager into that specific section with the custom role

The case manager would then be able to do accomodations/modifications for the student.

Unfortunately, unless the permissions for the roles are very locked down (so pay very close attention to it and test the role), it would also mean that the case manager could edit the course or create/edit/delete content in the course.

I hope this helps to give you some ideas of how it could be possible.

Thanks for the input. I am able to add in accommodations/modifications for students when I am assigned to the class as a teacher or special education teacher. Ideally, I would be able to assign accommodations/modifications to a student's profile that would apply to all classes the student is enrolled in without having to be enrolled in that class as well. This would simplify things for general education teachers and allow for special education case managers to ensure that their students are receiving the proper accommodations/modifications.
