Adjust total points on assignment

I have set an assignment for 50 points.  Some students already have submitted the assignment, but now I want to change the total to 30 points.  (The rubric has been adjusted. ) I have not scored any of the submitted assignments yet.

How can I change the total to 30 when there's a warning that I can't because students have already submitted. And a second warning that submitted assignments will have to be regraded.

Finally, after clicking "save", a third warning says:

Not everyone will be assigned this item. Would you like to continue? 

Should I continue? Will anything be affected as far as students who have already submitted?

@Norlandg If nothing has been scored yet, you are perfectly safe changing the points. As for the final alert you received, I would assume that is because the Assign To is not set to Everyone. Changing just the points though, before any grading has been completed, should not affect the students at all.
