After changing course end date no Start Assignment button for students

To allow assignment uploads after the due date, all assignments were due latest at the original course end date, I went to Settings and changed the course end date in Course details. However, students are anxious, because they cannot upload. There is no Start Assignment button in any of their late assignments!
I was then told to go to Settings and Sections to "make the necessary changes" (what ever that is supposed to mean) and saw that there is another course with a cryptic derivative course name to which apparently all students belong. I cannot change anything in the Sections and also not under People, where all students are listed.
What can I do, so that students who want to at least meet the new course end deadline can upload?
Thanks in advance!

Hi @Andreas_Hopf,
You're likely going to need to reach out to your school/institution Canvas team (usually in the eLearning, IT, or Digital Education areas) to inquire about the rules around course dates. Canvas itself is pretty flexible with many date options for schools/institutions to choose from to meet their own policies and procedures. My institution, for example, does not allow teachers to change course/section dates at all as we have them aligned with our official semester dates set by the Registrar. This works out well for us, but I know there are many other schools that do allow teachers to edit dates.
I know that this is not quite a complete answer to your question, but without knowing your school/institution policies this is about the best we can do in the community. I have to assume the functionality you're seeing is intentionally set up. When you reach out to the Canvas team, it's possible they will be able to adjust the dates for you, but also possible they they'll tell you things need to stick with the original dates.
I hope this info helps!
