Changing from two decimal places to one decimal

How do I change to grade book to only display one decimal place rather than two decimal places?

Thank you for contacting the Instructure Community. By default, the gradebook will use two characters after the decimal point. The only way to really change this is to use the total override option and enter the simplified total points for the students. Here is the Canvas guide:

However, there have certainly been others who have asked for the same thing. It does appear to be in an open status and hopefully the option will be available in the near future. For now, you can use the default 2 point decimal display or use the total override column. Hopefully this helps.

This is a rather unfortunate answer from Instructure.

It's the end of Summer '23 and it's hard to believe that Instructure seems to have no sense of significant figures.

The default two-decimal places gives the illusion of precision that is simply not there.

Anything that can be done to prioritize giving users the option of selecting the number of decimal places to display would be greatly appreciated...

P.S. I find posting in these forums and "voting" (which I've never done) really awkward and time-consuming. Perhaps Instructure can consider focus groups or some other way of getting feedback especially from folks in higher ed about much, much needed improvements.

Submiting ideas and voting isn't the only way that Instructure gathers feedback from us.  You mentioned focus groups as an example.  Although focus groups aren't specifically mentioned, I'm sure that they gather feedback from them as well.  In fact, here are other examples of where Instructure gathers feedback from us (look under the heading "Discover"):

This remains a problem. At the end of every quarter, I get at least 10 students emailing me about "I won't get into medical school if I have an A-, instead of an A. My grade is now 92.2%, could you just raise it to 93%? They do this for every possible decimal, even more than a whole number down. It's exasperating and leads to so much extra work because they won't take no for an answer. It's only a burden for this to be visible to them. Canvas should change their defaults. I've spoken to many colleagues who face the same problem.
