Cross-Listing with Different Syllabi and Schedules

Hi everyone,

I want to cross-list two sections of the same course that meet on different days. However, each section has its own syllabus and schedule with different test dates and deadlines.

If I cross-list, will students still see their section-specific syllabus and calendar? Or do I need to combine both schedules into one syllabus?

Any advice on how to handle this without confusing students?

Hi @dmly ...

When two or more courses are cross-listed together in Canvas, only enrollments are moved from one course to another.  Course content does not move.  So, if you are concerned about content within the Syllabus, I would recommend copying/pasting the contents of one of your Syllabus documents into a Microsoft Word file and saving it to your hard drive.  Then, you can have the courses cross-listed together..  After that, you can go into your Syllabus and make any edits to account for both sections that have been cross-listed together.

Also, as it relates to test dates and deadlines, you should be able to set different dates for both sections in the cross-listed course.

Another option to consider, depending on how you have the course shell designed: You could create a "Start Here" module for each section. When entering the name for the module, name it so that it refers to each specific section. (e.g. either "Start Here Section 01" and "Start Here Section 02" or "Start Here Monday / Wednesday section" and "Start Here Tuesday / Thursday section")

After you have the modules created, you can follow the guidance in How do I assign a module to individual sections or students? - Instructure Community - 609337 to setup some access rights.

After assigning a section to each module, make sure that "Pages" and "Files" area not visible to students (see How do I manage Course Navigation links? - Instructure Community - 1020) on the left-side course navigation area.

You can then upload files and create pages within each section's module.

Finally, publish both modules when you are ready.

P.S. Keep in mind that "View as Student" will not work because the "Test Student" is not enrolled into a specific section.
