The Instructure Community will enter a read-only state on November 22, 2025 as we prepare to migrate to our new Community platform in early December. Read our blog post for more info about this change.

In other LMS there is a way that the current date and time can be presented on the pages. This can also be configurable, either location or "system" current as default.
For example; when the student logs in, they see what the "deadline" time and date is displayed. Does Canvas have this ability? If not, is it something that could be added to the "system" files?

Hi @dewayne_demland ,
I would like to know more about which pages you are specifically looking for this on, it is things like assignment pages, quizzes and the like?
I am not sure I have ever seen anything like this in Canvas, so would be curious to find more about a couple of examples you would be looking for to see if Canvas has something similar.
Look forward to hearing from you!

Hi Stuart,
With online education, students are very often in different time zones.
Institutions have different policies for regarding that time. I have used
several other LMS, and they had the date and time in some location on every
page. It may not be just quizzes or assignments, but like we use web
conferencing for our students. I was wondering if Canvas has this function,
it not, how can it be suggested? It would help to eliminate student
confusion.

Canvas currently does not date stamp its pages, but you can certainly request this as a feature. Learn more at How does the feature idea process work in the Canvas Community?
One thing to note, is that I am not sure exactly why this is needed. Every PC I have ever owned includes the current date and time down on the task bar. My phone and iPad advise me of such when I first turn them on. And, users can set their current time zone in their account settings.
Kelley
Hi Kelley,
You are correct every system has the date and time in it. The point of this
is a matter of time zone. If the institution has time deadlines and
references, related to their location. It requires a student to calculate
time differences. This could mean that a student may miss a deadline, or a
meeting. If the institutions reference time is clearly indicated, no matter
where the student is on the website, it eliminates any question. This come
down to a customer service thing. If the customers remain happy and
satisfied, they will return. If they return, they will bring others. That
is why I have made this inquiry.

Hi, @dewayne_demland .
I think this will be helpful to your students: https://community.canvaslms.com/docs/DOC-10622-4212717410
Best,
Nelson
When a student (or any user) sets their Canvas to a local time zone (say Eastern Standard) , all dates from the school's home time zone (let's just use Pacific Standard) are adjusted appropriately, and this includes any availability and due dates for assignments, and any scheduled dates for conferences. I just tested that.
So you have your assignment due 11:59 p.m. on 11/16 in Seattle, the student in New York will see that the assignment is due by 2:59 a.m. on 11/17 in New York.
I just tested this in a sandbox on my test account.
So I guess I am still not seeing the problem.
Kelley
I'm new to the system as an administrator. Does canvas have the ability to show how long a student spent in a module or even a course?
@AlishaAlleman ...
In the "People" page of a course, you can see the total time spent in a course. This can be a bit misleading, though. A student could be logged into a course but then decide to leave his/her computer and do something else...while Canvas is still tracking time logged into the course.
I know I'm adding to this conversation several months after the last post, but there's a feature that allows teachers/designers to add Pages to student To-Do lists by checking the box next to the add to student to-dos in the options section below the content. (How do I create a new page in a course?) I use this frequently in my courses, and students say this helps, especially when content isn't connected to a submission, discussion, or quiz. I'm pretty sure this would adjust for timezones too. Would this feature help?
Hello there, @dewayne_demland ...
I have been reviewing older questions here in the Canvas Community, and I stumbled upon your question. I wanted to also check in with you because I noticed that there hasn't been any new activity in this topic since @KristinL 's feedback on March 9, 2019. It looks like you've been receiving some good help here. I do agree with the comments from @kmeeusen on November 26, 2018 that users setting their own time zones should solve the issue...therefore students don't have to manually calculate the due dates/times assignments should be turned in. @nr2522 gave you a Guide to look at, but if you are an instructor, there are a couple other related Guides that I would point you to:
How do I set a time zone for a course?
How do I set a time zone in my user account as an instructor?
Further, your school's local Canvas administrator should have already set the local time zone for your school's entire Canvas account:

If you feel that one of the above responses has helped to answer your question, please feel free to mark that person's answer as "Correct". However, if you are still looking for some help with this question, please come back to this topic to post a message below letting Community members know how we might be able to assist you. For the time being, I am going to mark your question as "Assumed Answered" because there hasn't been much activity in this topic for a while, but that won't prevent you or others from posting additional questions and/or comments below that are related to this topic. I hope that's alright with you, DeWayne. Looking forward to hearing back from you soon.
In a Page, add the following line to the HTML code.
<p><iframe src="https://freesecure.timeanddate.com/clock/i7apts3p/n4520/tt1/tw0" width="129"
This works if you add the final characters, which I'm sure you probably know but they somehow got lopped off of your reply: ></iframe></p>
For example:
<p><iframe src="https://freesecure.timeanddate.com/clock/i7apts3p/n4520/tt1/tw0" width="129"></iframe></p>
I have not researched whether this URL is a safe source and because of that I am not sure my institution allows this. I just I don't have time to research more . . . but for anyone attempting to use the markup kindly provided by dwalsh3, it might be nice to know.
