Deleting announcements as a student

I have recently been annoyed at the amount of announcements in my announcement box as a student.

I went through and deleted some of the lecturers announcements but paused to think whether this was deleting the announcements for for the rest of the students or just myself. I cannot seem to find an answer to this anywhere.

Thank you for sharing the screenshot.  It took me a while, but I think I now understand why you have the option to delete announcements.  I noticed that you have the “+ Announcement” button at the top right corner of your screenshot.  So, this tells me that your school has chosen to give students a certain permission to add announcements to courses…even as students.  Normally, this is something that is left to an instructor only permission, but there may be use cases for wanting students to create announcements in a course, too.  Do you have the “+ Announcement” button in other courses, too?  My guess is that you probably do?  Since you have that button, then you would be able to delete announcements.  So, to answer your original question, I believe that if you deleted an announcement (even if it wasn’t created by you), then it would delete it from everyone’s view…not just your own.

Hi @LaurenAdams1 ...

Could you please provide a bit more detail on how you are deleting announcements as a student?  I may be missing something, but if I were to log in as a student into my own sandbox course to do some testing, I wasn't able to delete announcements.  I even went back and checked some of my course settings, and I also checked some of the administrative permissions and settings (I am a Canvas admin at my school) to see if I could find anything that would allow this...but I wasn't able to find anything.  It's quite possible I'm just overlooking something, but I'm not sure.  If you could provide some more info (and maybe even a screenshot), that would be helpful...thanks!

When I click on the three dots next to an announcement it allows me to delete it. I don't know how as when I have looked for the answer to this elsewhere they all mention that students can't delete announcements like you mentioned.

This announcement page is within one of my courses and I checked whether my account had the student role and it does.

@LaurenAdams1  I might suggest that you let your instructor know about this.

I agree it is a bit strange...but there may be reasons why their Canvas admins have set up that role like that...who knows.

Lauren may need her instructor know to reach out to her school's Online Learning/eLearning department about this...as this would be an account-level permission that needs to be configured.
