Do you need to have microsoft word / products (eg excel, powerpoint etc) to get the most out of CANVAS?  We are considering just making use of Google Docs?

Any tips / things we should be aware of?

In my experience, while there are some differences between the two services (I recommend comparing on their respective product websites), you absolutely don't need Microsoft Office to effectively use Canvas. Both services integrate equally well. Here are a few guides that show how Google can be used in Canvas:

You can also embed links to Google Docs/Sheets/Slides files into assignments, discussions, quizzes, or pages within your course.

The only thing to be aware of is that if you use Google, they'll require students to sign up for an account using their school-provided email address so that most integrations/collaborations are easier to share and set up.
