Created an assignment and made it active for viewing by students. Had to change the due date to a later date (which was fine and worked as I anticipated) but when the day of the initial due date arrived students were marked as "Late" for the assignment. I have tried this several times and keep getting the same results, it's as if the Canvas Assignment doesn't recognize the updated due date. Any ideas??
Can you verify that you are changing the due date and not the available until date?
I'm sorry to question you, but it is just that I've never experienced this before and I change due dates a lot.
If you are changing the due date, I would recommend you ask your Canvas Administrator to submit a ticket to Instructure as this is a malfunction of the system.
I have made sure I am not adjusting avail date calendar, just due date calendar. I will go back and review it again, it's happened several times so I'm pretty sure I am only adjusting the due date. Most avail dates for assignments are 2 weeks beyond due date. In the end I assume I am doing something wrong and just haven't figured it out yet. I will take screenshots of the editing and make sure I am doing it correctly.
Thnaks for the quick feedback
The issue seems to have occurred again...I had an existing due date on Nov 4th for an assignment I used last year, I updated the assignment to Nov 8th due date (prior to any student submission), and when I made the assignment active, it applied late points to any student who hadn't yet turned it )even though today is the 8th, and the assignment isn't due until tonight.
I have two screenshots of the due date and the grade book, but I am getting a message that says I do not have permission to upload images...
The grade book is green for students who have submitted the assignment today and 1/2 points for those who haven't
Hello @ScotGillis
When you import an assignment from another course, the due date with that assignment will be the one it copies over with. If you have a late policy applied to the gradebook, as soon as that assignment comes in, the policy applies. It's unfortunate and hopefully will be fixed in the future, but you either need to temporarily turn off the late policy while you copy over assignments, or manually go in and set a default grade back to a blank slate. If this isn't the process and you are creating them here from scratch, but they are defaulting to other due dates that you did not set, that is abnormal and you should contact Canvas Support. Hopefully this helps.
