Due Date for Assignments

Hi there,

There is some confusion among our students as the notification they receive on the right of their screens for assignments shows as follows (July 19 at 12:15pm). This 12:15pm is actually the due time but students see this and think that their assignment/test/exam/quiz is only at 12:15 so they are missing them. Please see attached image for reference!

Is there a solution to change this either to (July 19 DUE 12:15pm or (July 19 at 9:00am).

Looking forward to your response.

Hello @JarredLambert

Thank you for contacting the Canvas Community. We're sorry to hear you've been experiencing issues with students missing assignments. Thank you for providing the screenshot and explanation. The time listed on the right for students in their to-do list (or calendar) is and will be the actual "due date" for the assignment itself. Unless you change the due date/time or remove it, there isn't a way to display a different time on their to-do list other than what has been set in t he assignment. However, there are some options.

1. Give  students this guide and explain to them  that is when it is due. If students click on the assignment and you have also set available from-until times (a window of accessibility)  that will  show for  the students and they will know that they can start the assignment simply by going to it.

2. If your "until" time is the exact time that  the quiz is due, you may want to consider extending that by a few hours for the students who come in at 12:15 thinking that is when it starts. This will  ensure they still have some time to complete the quiz within a timely manner and then lock.

3. Basically, just convey to your students how the due date works, and for special quizzes that have particular timeframes - you  can send out announcement reminders as well. Hopefully this all helps!
