I'm sure that this is something that I did, but I'm not sure how to fix it.
My grade book is no longer viewable to me as an instructor. When I click on "Grades," it goes to the page that used to show the grade book. I can briefly see the grade book and then it quickly goes to a blank white page with a small tv in the top right corner.
Help, please.
I'm having the exact same issue and have been for two days. Glad it's not just me. It's making me crazy. I can still access grades by going through the Assignment and Quiz links to the Speed Grader, but it's not ideal. What's happening?
That's when this problem started for me too.
Best, Linda
Good afternoon @LindaWaters and @DianeBoldt ...
This sounds really strange. Would you both be able to post a screenshot of this? But, at the same time, I want to be careful that you aren't revealing student names and student grades in those images. Just trying to understand what might be going on to provide some help.
Have you also tried clearing your browser history/cache or trying a completely different browser? An up-to-date version of Google Chrome and/or Mozilla Firefox are good choices...though I've also had some good success with the Microsoft Edge browser on my own Window 11 laptop.
After you clear your browser cache, close the browser completely, restart the browser, and then try signing back in to Canvas.
And finally, just to confirm... your "Grades" course navigation menu on the left-hand side of your course should typically not have the crossed-out eye icon next to it. If it does, that means it is not viewable to your students, and you would need to un-hide it. To do this, you can use this Guide to make the "Grades" course navigation menu visible to your students:
How do I manage Course Navigation links?
Looking forward to hearing from both of you soon.
@LindaWaters ...
Thank you for sharing that screen shot. I recommend that you reach out to Canvas Support to report this issue. They may have some additional suggestions for you. Once you've found a solution, please come back here to update this thread...thanks!
Hi @KevinDaly ...
As I mentioned to @LindaWaters (above), I think it would be best for you to contact Canvas Support about this. That way, they can (hopefully) take a deeper look into this issue with you.
Keep Community members posted...thanks!
My office computer, which is a Dell, is now showing the grades. My home computer, which is an Apple product, is still not.
@LindaWaters ...
That is strange. Please try clearing your browser cache on your Mac. If that doesn't work, give Canvas Support a call:
Keep us posted here in the Community.
There was a change made to Canvas Gradebook last week that uses the structuredClone browser API. structuredClone that is only compatible with Safari 15.4 and later, as well as versions of Chrome and Firefox released in the last 2 years.
I'm not sure what version of Safari 5.13 is.
So perhaps this instructor just needs to upgrade if they are running 15.3. The requirements page does mention that "Your computer operating system should be kept up to date with the latest recommended security updates and upgrades."
@jonespm, Sorry, that should have been 15.3, not 3.15.
According to the Canvas Community page, What are the browser and computer requirements for Instructure products?, Safari 15 should be fine.
Yes, they do recommend that the user use the most recent of everything, but that's not always possible. Unfortunately, many universities have computers locked down so that the user can't update anything themselves, and the updates that are pushed by IT are often quite a bit out-of-date. In addition, many people (including me) prefer not to make major updates at critical times in the semester, due to having been burned by that in the past.
If something that they updated rendered a currently listed version of Safari unusable with Canvas, then perhaps they should update the requirements page.
I have two instructors reporting this issue and both are on MAC OS X 10.15.7. One is using Chrome 110 and the other is using Safari 15.1 so the browser does not appear to be at the root of the issue, but rather the OS. Any input to help me out here? I'm a new Canvas Admin (been Sub-Admin for years and teacher forever!) so I'm struggling to help them.
I just spoke with an instructor on MacOS Big Sur (11.7.4), who is having the problem. It is definitely not browser-related, since she has the latest version of Chrome, as well as Safari, and both fail to load the Grades page. She is in the process of upgrading the OS, and will report back.
I know that a lot of our faculty (including me) do not do major updates to the OS in the middle of the semester, so this is very unfortunate that a Canvas update breaks a critical functionality in the middle of a semester. The only guidance that Instructure gives regarding OS is that it must be able to run the supported browser versions, which is not sufficient to avoid this issue.
Hi All -
Thanks for all the help and brainstorming solutions. I updated the OS on my MacBook and the problem is solved.
Best, Linda
