I'm not to canvas and am trying to set up a home page from scratch. Where do I go to start this process? Templates? Etc?

If you are starting a new course, it will have a blank course shell where you can fill it in with any content that you want. Unless your school has designed some templates for your use, Canvas doesn't have any built-in templates that I am aware of that come included "out of the box". You might have access to Canvas Commons...which is a large repository of course content that people from all over the world have shared which you could import into your own course and tweak as needed. But, if you wanted to create something brand new for your course, you can do that, too.
There are a couple resources I'd recommend for you:
- Set Up Your Canvas Course in 30 minutes or Less - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com)
- (1) Canvas LMS Tutorials for Online Teaching - YouTube by Ashlee Espinosa -- Ashlee has some great tutorials here, and she walks you through everything you want to know about how to get a course set up. Highly recommend! (By the way, your question about setting up a home page is addressed in her video #4.)
