Help using stylus to grade math papers

Hi all,

I've been trying to use stylus to grade math papers with my HP Envy. My computer & stylus do great with all other programs but Canvas. When I try and use the pen tool in speedgrader, if I pick up the pen at all (even to create a T), it shifts all around. Other than downloading and uploading, any ideas? Is the IPad and Apple pencil truly the only compatible tool for this? And does it even work?

Hi @JamiWeidmann,

I'd suggest trying a different browser perhaps.  I don't have a windows pen or touch device, but I know browser support for those things has traditionally been a challenge.  I'd suggest trying Microsoft Edge, as I remember reading that Microsoft made some efforts a few years ago to improve support for that kind input in Edge, but you could also try Firefox or Google Chrome.

Hi Chris,

It's been year, so you have likely sorted this out by now, but I noticed last Fall, maybe Spring that the interface had gotten really buggy with any writing device and browser, but I've got an iPad Pro that solved my issue. However, our instructional assistants are struggling to help our online students with feedback on their graded math papers. So I've been searching around for a similar suggestion for how to make Canvas work in the browser based speed grader. It looks like this is classified as known issue that the Canvas Engineers are still working on.

I love my iPad, but they are too expensive to outfit out instructional assistants with in the classroom.  Hoping this issue gets resolved soon. If any Canvas moderators are out there, would love an update on the timeline for resolving this interface issue.

 Thank you. I was using Chrome. I'll try Firefox and see what happens! Edge isn't a "supported browser," but I will try that, too, if Firefox doesn't work!

Hi @JamiWeidmann,

Do you mean Edge isn't supported by your school/institution?  It is definitely supported by Canvas, as listed on the  What are the browser and computer requirements for... - Instructure Community - 66  guide.  Just wanted to clarify this for you or anyone else who might come across this thread in the future.

I've now tried in Firefox and Edge and they do the same. They let me start to write with stylus and then just start shifting all around on the paper. 

Any one else able to grade using stylus in Speedgrader without being on the Ipad?
