I have a table and would like to make one of the columns wider.

There are a few different ways to do it.
The easiest is probably to just point the mouse to the right border of one of the cells from that column and drag it.
But for more precise control, you can select all cells in that column, then on top of the textbox, click "Table", then "Cell", then "Cell Properties", and change the width in the window that opens:

If you want to learn more about tables in web/HTML design and accessibility, you can also check out the links below (the first two are from the same website and include a "Try it Yourself" feature but you can also try in something like a page in a Canvas course; just do not publish the page itself until ready, unless you are using something like a sandbox).
