How to allow students to return ONLY to questions they did NOT answer?

I'd like to set up quizzes so that students see one question at a time but are able to skip and return to a question they can't immediately answer.  Right now if they press "Next" they're moved to the next question and can not return whether they answered it or not.  

"Show one question at a time" allows them to return to any and all questions. 

Is there a way for students to return only to questions they did NOT answer?

"Lock questions after answering"  below "Show one question at a time"   does not do that.  Which I find strange because it says Lock questions AFTER answering.   So if it hasn't been answered it should NOT locked, correct?

It is not possible to have a student go back and attempt just the questions they did not answer. You can either let them go back and review all of the questions or you can let them go back and review none of the questions.

For Classic / Legacy Quizzes:

For "lock questions after answering," skipping is considered answering -- a willful choice not to answer. The documentation (What options can I set in a quiz? ) states "Questions will be locked even if a student clicks the Next button without answering the question."

This is communicated even clearer to the students.

When the student begins a question-at-a-time quiz, they are given this warning before they start.

If they try to press Next without answering the question, they get this message

Canvas did add the ability to moderate quizzes with New Quizzes. How do I moderate a student's assessment attempt in New Quizzes?  

There have been several feature ideas over the years to allow students to return to a quiz and pick up where they left off. Canvas is not doing any development with Classic Quizzes, so it won't be added there.

It's disappointing that this simple and seemingly straightforward and necessary option is not available.

On a paper exam, students routinely skip a question they need more time answering to return to it later. I've done it myself probably on every exam I've ever taken.

I also feel the statement "Lock questions after answering" misleading. Skipping an answer should not be considered answering.

It should not be an all or nothing option with the questions.

Truly disappointing. This is a simple issue that should be resolved.

There are those of us who want skipping an answer to be considered answering a question, though. I am trying to mimic a classroom activity that had to go online because of the COVID-19 shutdown. In class, it used an audience response system and students were forced to answer then and they could not go back and if they didn't answer in the time allowed, they didn't get to answer. The question was shown on the screen, not on their individual computers. Except for the time limit being on the entire quiz rather than individual questions, this works well for me.

I don't follow your comparison to paper exams. On a paper exam, they get to see all of the questions at the same time and they can go back and review and change as many as they want.

The setting that most closely mimic a paper exam would be to not check "one question at a time" and, if you did, you wouldn't check "lock questions after answering." It really sounds like you want to deliver one question at a time but not lock the questions. This functionality is already supported.

What happens is most students do not return to questions they answered right away, so leaving that "lock questions" unchecked won't affect them. But it will allow students to go back and answer questions they couldn't answer. 

In Classic Quizzes, students can flag questions to return to: How do I take a quiz? and How do I take a quiz where I can only view one question at a time? 

In New Quizzes, students can pin questions to return to: How do I take an assessment in New Quizzes? and How do I take an assessment where I can only view one question at a time in New Quizzes?

I am trying to minimize the chance of cheating which is why i chose "one question at a time". If all the questions are present then students can text or call each other to compare answers.

Yes on a paper exam they can see all questions but a proctor is there in person to prevent cheating. Virtually this is not feasible.

In my mind this is a simple issue that should be resolved. Just simply allow students to see one question at a time (questions would be shuffled as an added precaution to cheating), but permit them to return those questions they need more time answering.

I think Canvas should provide more flexibility and faster software implementation response in meeting community needs. This is a basic feature that is implemented in other LMS, so it is possible. One wants to give students the option to mark and skip a question so that they can return to it. And one also wants to give teachers the option to minimize cheating.
