I do not want Canvas to calculate my students' final letter grade. I want the freedom to issue the semester letter grade in an additional grade center column. For example, a student earns 895 points out of 1000, a B on my grade scale--but the student clearly deserves an A in the class. How do I create a column that lets me manually type in the letter grade that I will post to his/her transcript if different from the grading scale? Basically, how does Canvas let me work as effectively as Blackboard, letting me enter grades as "text," rather than "percent" or "numerical score"?
Hi @proy33 ~ Currently in Canvas, there is not a way to manually override the final score created by the assignments in your gradebook. However, please check out https://community.canvaslms.com/ideas/1696-override-final-grade and add comments to that discussion! Also, @garth has a cool blog post that illustrates how to adjust final grades using an additional assignment group: Override / Adjust the Final Grade.
Thanks for these links, @KristinL ! My school does not currently require the final grades to appear in Canvas, but it's good to have these options if/when that is required.
So this has been on request since 2017.
It has been 5 years. You have done nothing, for a BASIC database function that literally would take 5 minutes to implement. Your claims that you will "take into account" user requests is BS. Stop claiming you will. You're lying.
Canvas is garbage.
Hello there, @proy33 ...
I noticed that we have not heard from you since you first posted this question on May 11th and then received a few replies from members of the Canvas Community. Have you had the opportunity to review these responses? If so, did any of them help to answer your question? Or, are you still looking for some help with this question? If you feel that one of the above responses has helped to answer your question, please go ahead and mark it as "Correct". However, if you still need some help with this question, please let us know by posting a message below so that members of the Canvas Community can continue to help you. For now, since we've not heard from you in quite a while and since there hasn't been any new activity here since May 17th, I'm going to mark your question as "Assumed Answered", but this won't prevent you or others from posting additional replies below. I hope that's okay with you, Wood. Looking forward to hearing from you soon!
@AaronPotter Canvas has implemented a final grade override since this conversation. It is a feature option for your course if it is not on by default. How do I override a student's final grade in the Gradebook?
Hope this helps!

They still have not implemented text columns in the grade book, a basic database function which would take, literally, 5 minutes to implement, and which has been on request for 6 years now.
Canvas is unresponsive garbage. I will be recommending my institution drop the product.
@AaronPotter sorry you feel that way! Canvas is my 5th or 6th learning management system that I have used and been responsible for being an administrator and trainer of. It is by far my favorite one! There are things that I wish were different or would like to see changed but in other areas it works great. Obviously not everyone is going to love it but when I have asked students that have been on several different ones, Canvas is always their favorite.
Don't use the new Blackboard Ultra -- it does not allow text columns in the gradebook. But the older version of Blackboard allowed this feature. Unfortunately, my school upgraded to Blackboard Ultra (to me, it was a downgrade). I was thinking of using Canvas, but I am disappointed that it also does not allow text columns. Why is it so difficult to implement this feature?
I didn't expect to see this request unanswered for 7 years!
This is an absolutely necessary feature. Please do not try to brush it off with answering some of the examples. There are always more examples and real needs.
- I want to upload their letter grade so they can see it (please don't refer to the grading scheme. What if I have my own spreadsheets and formulas, that I simply do not feel comfortable to implement in Canvas?)
- I want to upload a roster, so that every student can see the name of their teammate there (please don't ask me to create groups, just imagine for a second that this is not possible. e.g. what if their "teammate" is a faculty member not registered in the course, that I am asking students to reach out to)
- I want to upload a unique password that I generate for each student, and I want each student to see theirs (this is another example similar to above)
- I want to create a column that shows each user's GitHub ID in front of them.
- etc.
Again, being able to create/upload a simple text column (which is NOT included in grade calculation) is an absolute requirement.
Please implement it.
Thanks
