How to mute Assignment Comments in SpeedGrader

How can I mute Assignment Comments in SpeedGrader?

I give comments on ungraded assignments using SpeedGrader. Last year I was able to mute an assignment in SpeedGrader, upload my comments at my own pace, and then unmute the assignment so all the comments were visible at the same time.

Now, it appears that there is no way to mute comments, just grades, using the New Gradebook. I have my Gradebook set for manual grading. Am I missing something?

Even though it says "grades," if you read further, it does state that instructor comments should be hidden from students as well as grade information.

Is this not what you are experiencing?

Thanks for this--at the time I posted the question, I hadn't yet tried the feature because I was afraid students would be able to see my comments before I wanted them to. But, I tried out the SpeedGrader this week and it's working as you described.

I will say, the ability to just mute the assignment from the assignment page was a much easier/more intuitive way to make this happen, but perhaps that's not true for users who use the whole Gradebook function.

This is strange. My grades are hidden, and the students can still see the comments I submitted, so there is a disconnect with this and how Canvas works at my institution.

Not solved. We have profs. complaining that comments are not muted in SpeedGrader.

As of March 26, 2023, this is does not work. With grades hidden, assignment comments still show up. Definitely a *huge* problem, I wish Canvas would address it rather than saying it is solved.

I understand that the people at Canvas are too busy to fix this, but ... could they change the text that reads "Assignment Comments" above the box to read "Assignment Comments (Visibility Info)", with a link to an explanation that whatever you write, in that box, will be visible to the students even if you chosen to hide grades? That way, instructors would not be caught unawares...

As of September 30, 2023, this still does not work. With grades hidden, assignment comments still show up. Mute the friggin' comments!!

As of February 18, 2024, this is still occurring. Students should not be able to see assignment comments when the grades are hidden. How is this still broken? Wow!

Same problem here. Extremely frustrating; I often revise grades and comments as I go through the assignments and I have students responding to my document annotations as I'm making them!

The worst part about this bug is that it's an intermittent one without a fix. Our Canvas team here can't seem to replicate it or figure out how or why it's happening.

This is not solved. My grade posting policy is set to manual, and I have the crossed out eye icon in the SpeedGrader, but it doesn't matter. Some of my students can see and reply to my comments before I release the grades, sometimes even before I've finished grading their paper! It's a really big problem. Not only for the obvious reasons, but also because I'm training teaching assistants who are still learning to give feedback, so I need to review their work before the students can see anything. I also have students who see the feedback before I'm even done grading and then try to resubmit additional drafts and expect me to regrade them.
