Is there a way to disable "Settings" tab in the left-hand navigation for the Teacher/TA role?

  1. Our course content (like modules, assignments, and quizzes) is pre-loaded from an external tool, and the course settings are set by our course admins.
  2. Teachers only need to grade and collaborate with students, so we’ve turned off all options for them to add, edit, or delete course content or any other type of setting.
  3. We’ve only allowed teachers to edit/manage student grades.
  4. We have disabled many unused navigation menus, but since "Settings" tab in the left-hand menu is still visible to teachers they might change the course settings, making it hard for our course admins to keep track and revert to original settings.
  5. We also removed all permissions from the TA role and assigned it to teachers, but the "Settings" tab still shows up for TA role.
  6. Is there any way to disable the tab Teacher/TA role? If we were to create a custom role, what would be the the recommend role to base it off of?

Any help would be appreciated!

Thank you!

Hi @itadminis,

I believe the visibility of the course settings menu is automatic and controlled by the base role of the user, meaning anyone who has a Teacher or TA based role will see the menu item (I believe designer-based roles also see settings, but we don't use that role at my institution so I can't easily verify).  You can lock down a lot of things inside that menu with the course-role permissions, though it sounds like you already know this.  The only other way to get rid of that menu item would be through custom CSS/JavaScript attached to your account theme, though that is not foolproof and I'm not sure I'd recommend it in this particular case.

Hope this info helps, even if it's not what you were hoping to hear.
