Is there any way to set a lateness penalty for a straight % penalty if late? No intervals, just "if it's late, deduct 50%"

Is there some way I can trick Canvas into a very simple lateness penalty of 50% if the item is late at all?  None of this incrementally increasing penalty by hour or day?  I thought I was doing this by setting "lowest possible grade" to 50%.  But, I see that when a student earned 2 points on a 3-point assignment that was submitted late, they ended up with 1.5 points posted to the gradebook instead of the 1 point they should have gotten (50% of 2).  

Is there a way to make Canvas do this very simple algorithm of, "Late = 50% of earned grade" ???  This is how my policies on my syllabus are and I thought I had set up Canvas correctly (see above), but now I see it's treating everything that's late as if it were a perfect score whose only crime was being late.  Thanks!

Based on a similar question from 2022 at Late policy that is not dependent on how late the assignment is this is not possible.

This would need to be submitted as an idea in the Community in order to be considered.

I have the same issue but it sounds like there is an existing "idea" in progress already. Is there a way I can bump this issue for consideration and/or updates on status?
