When looking at grades in a class and choosing to sort grades with the grade book "view options", no grades are being sorted after choosing an option. Grades are only being listed in alphabetical order of the title of the assignment. I am attempting to sort my grade book from oldest to newest grade, as I always have, but the grades staying in alpha after selecting this options.
Please Help!
It sounds like you're using the View Options tab in the gradebook settings menu to sort your columns the same way that assignments are sorted in the Syllabus course summary. In the Syllabus tool's course summary, all assignments without due dates show at the bottom of the list in alphabetical order. Is it possible that some of your assignments have no due date set? If so, they will show to the right of (i.e. after) the columns with due dates, and they will be sorted alphabetically.
Another view to try is opening the Assignments index in Student View. The default student view of the Assignments index separates dated and undated assignments. This may also be helpful.
Hi @rjohnston1,
If you could provide any more clarifying info, it may help get us figure out exactly what you're doing. I interpret that you're trying to sort a column in the gradebook from oldest grade to newest, but I don't recall that ever being an option. I checked the https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-sort-an-individual-assignment-column-in... guide, and it does just say you can sort by the value of the grade, but the date the grade was entered. If you can provide any further info, please do!

I have a similar issue. When I select Due Date - Newest to Oldest under View Options in the Gradebook Settings, I get a weird arrangement with assignments with due dates a month ago before assignments that were due yesterday. What gives?
Hi @MCareyMCPS,
Without being able to see your course or grades area at all, my guess is that you have some "differentiated assignments" (assignments where only certain students are assigned to the assignment, or where different students/sections have different due dates than others). If that's the case there are a couple notes on the How do I arrange columns in the Gradebook? - Instructure Community - 1018 guide that talk about what happens when sorting by due dates with those:
Does this seem like it may be the case for you?

That seems to be the case.
Frustrating that I can't sort my gradebook by section and have the assignments sorted by due date.
