Issues managing duplicate question banks

Jump to solution

It seems as though I end up with multiple duplicate question banks, this is a multi part issue that has bothered me for a few years. I'm just finally now trying to resolve it, instead of using my tedious work arounds.

Caveat: I searched for an answer to this, but keep finding my way back to the basics of building question banks and 'managing' them.

Issues:

When copying content from an old course, into a new course, I often get multiple question banks with the same name.

If I edit one of them (Lets say "Chapter 1"), I have no way of knowing if my quiz is pulling from the 'proper' question bank, or the one that isn't updated.

When I click on the quizzes button on the left panel and then the three dots (to find "Manage Question Banks", I am provided a list of 'Course Question Banks' (there are no duplicates there at this time).

However, if I click the button: "View Bookmarked Banks", I get this much longer list (3 images)

Bookmarked Banks list 1

continuing:

Bookmarked Banks list 2

and finally...

Bookmarked Banks list 3

Thus, that is one issue that I'd like some explanation on... (why the lists are different, is the second list bookmarked banks, or was the first list the bookmarked list).

NOTICE: there is no: 'UWT - Dent - Preface - Chapter 1' shown above (in either list)... but it is SOMEWHERE!

I can see (and select, thank goodness, because this is the one I just updated) 'UWT - Dent - Preface - Chapter 1', when I (in the same course) create a Question group, there are OTHER question banks from which I can choose (such as 'UWT - Dent - Preface - Chapter 1' as shown below...

adding a question group and using a question bank that was not visible 15 seconds prior image

Any thoughts?

Also, I'm wondering why the time below says 4:27 pm, instead of 3:27? Doesn't this SAAS adjust for changes in time?

^^^^ not an issue we need to discuss... however the question bank issue is.

Note, it does not appear that I can create a question bank at the account level. I can only do so at the Course level.

Thank you very much to whomever helps me figure this out. I owe you a big thank you and a coffee!

I'm really hoping to screenshare and look at all this together in real time. I promise to pay it forward after I figure it out.

I'm a geek, teach GIS and utilize Canvas extensively, it's bothering me that I can't figure this out.

Regards,

Greg

Hi Greg,

Yeah the quiz bank thing is a mess and can qualify as an official labor of Hercules in trying to wrangle it to make sense. But from what I can tell based on my experiences and your screen shots:

1. The 2nd set of 3 screen shots are the bookmarked banks. There is the little bookmark flag on the right-hand column next to each bank name. Unmark the old banks from April 2015 to get rid of duplicates.

2. Duplicate banks happen when you clone the course. That makes sense, but are the cloned course quizzes pulling from the cloned banks or the original banks. Hmmmm. I dunno. Smiley Sad

I really want to say the cloned course is using the cloned banks; the course copy is a complete self-contained copy with all links automagically updated to refer to the new current course. One way to find out is to rename the original banks and then see where the quiz says it's pulling from.

3. yeah that UWT - Dent - Preface - Chapter 1 bank must be with the course past the Unfiled questions in the course list. Somehow you managed not to have book marked that one. Smiley Wink

That's all I have to offer, but I'm in the UW system, so you can ping my email for more convo about it. The community here is the best bet though.

Cheers - Shar

Thank you Shar,

Crazy how difficult Instructure makes this. I was excited to see that I could have 'Account' question banks, until I realized that I don't have that level of access. ho-hum...

Seems as though having Account Based question banks (similar to 'Account Files') would negate the need to continually mess with duplicate question banks, updating one question in one bank, only to find out that I updated the right question, in the wrong bank. (That is how (this time around), all this got started, I had a typo on a question, student asked about it, I went in to fix it and realized I had duplicate banks and somehow, the bank I was looking to update, wasn't even listed.

When pulling question banks in, I don't have the luxury of knowing which was updated at what time/date, thus have no idea which is being used where. This little tidbit of info during the 'create question group' would help somewhat.

I'm hoping someone from Instructure has figured this out and can fully explain.

(Alas, but with still not being able to re-order my rubrics items (an issue from 4 years ago), I'm not going to hold my breath. 🙂 )

I greatly appreciate the reply, thank you Shar!

For anyone else stumbling on this thread:

I ended up installing some Canvancements to help make my work easier, and it really does. Including sorting the rubrics.

Here’s a thread we had last year January about the Sorting the Find a Question Bank Dialogue. It’s a long but interesting read, I promise.

I agree about wanting account level question banks.... would be sooooo much better.
