I was just updating a single assignment item in a course in Canvas. I selected “Save” and Canvas did nothing. Then I saw there were no dates at the bottom of that screen? I selected “Manage Due Dates and Assign To” and discovered that there should have been an error message that showed up on the original edit screen when you save if the item dates are out or range. I only saw the error message after I selected the “Manage Due Dates and Assign To”. The only reason I knew to go there was because of past experience with Canvas and knowing that if the dates are out of range it will not save the updates to an item!
See the attached. Instructure should definitely address this issue. If someone tries to save an item, and the dates are out of range, an obvious error message needs to be displayed. Perhaps even taking the user to the “Manage Due Dates and Assign To” screen.
If I did not have previous experience with Canvas, I would not have known to check the dates!

Hi @clpatter and @tfilipiak1,
The revised UI for assign-to/dates rolled out today. You should no longer see the sidebar, and error messages when saving should be prominently displayed again now!

Hi there, @tfilipiak1 ...
I'm not sure if you've seen this recent blog post, but I think it will help to address your question:
Updates to the Assign To Interface - Instructure Community - 610506 (canvaslms.com)
I just spent half an hour trying to figure out why one of our instructors couldn't save. I'll be happy when they revert back, but in the meantime, this will definitely cause confusion and frustration.
