Missing to Late Auto Apply

In the traditional gradebook, I thought it used to automatically change the "Missing" status to "Late" when a score was input. This is for "no submission" or "on paper" assignments.

It no longer does this, and manually adjusting all statuses takes a long time.

Am I missing a setting or something?

Thank you!

Thank you for that clarification, Courtney. Yes, I do understand what you mean.

Unfortunately, I do not recall what the exact experience was.  Maybe someone else in the Community does.

Since you asked this question on Thursday, June 5th, I am not sure if someone else will see it and respond back.

If you would like a quicker (and an official response and if it is available to you at your institution), I would recommend reaching out directly to Canvas Support.

Hi @CourtneyKimball,

I believe the functionality you're describing would only work for "online" assignments, not for "no submission" or "on paper" ones.  This is because Canvas uses the submission date/time to determine when something is late, and that info isn't available for "no submission" or "on paper".

On one hand, you could perhaps request that the time you're grading be compared to the due date and used to make a determination.  On the other hand, grading doesn't usually happen immediately after a deadline, so that method would be wrong in a lot of cases too.

This is a tough thing to say, but I think you're likely stuck with manually switching the status for the way you have things set up.
