I gave an exam in my class and it had 4 short answer questions at the end. Usually when I grade these and press update, the gradebook updates as well, however, with this one, I can see the updated score in Speed Grader, but the gradebook does not update. Suggestions?

We were having a similar issue this was the response from Canvas Support and it did clear the issue up for us.
"You called Canvas Support today because you were working with an instructor who was grading New Quizzes short answer questions but the grade was not updating on the gradebook side. In the example that you were showing it looked like this was due to the course being concluded which would prevent the grades from being passed from New Quizzes. If you come across this issue again or have any additional questions, please don't hesitate to give us a call or email us at support@instructure.com."
I had this problem and I discovered that my student had two entries for the quiz. I could not figure out how to delete the blank submission so I literally had to grade it before the grade was shown in my gradebook. In another class, the student made an entry to the assignment after I graded it and I had to go back in, delete the grade and re-enter it. Not sure if either of these will apply, but this is why a few of my grades were not showing in the gradebook.
I'm running into the same problem. Not sure what's different about this quiz versus the two earlier in the semester. Even in speedgrader, I can grade the questions, hit the update button, and see that the student's grade isn't being updated.
Canvas can be so frustrating 😛
This same thing is happening to me, on the latest quiz, but on two it did update. It has to do with entering the score for the problem without clicking either the right or wrong check box. If I choose either of those, then change the score to the partial credit score, and update, the data goes to the gradebook.
I selected the right or wrong check box for each question, updated the score at the bottom, but it is still showing a grade of a 0 for all my students. This is my first new quiz this year.
For me, when I grade short answers on a combination of short answers and multiple choice, I always have problems. I can hit the update button 4 - 5 times and it still does not update the score. It still has a gold ball next to the studen'ts name and in the gradebook it looks like it has not been graded.
Help, please!!! This has been happening for over three years.
Also still having this problem, how has canvas not fixed this yet? My school is switching to "new quizzes" this semester and it is a hot mess.

This is similar to the response I received, and explains the problem well. However, this did not solve the problem of needing to input grades.
The proffered solution was to manually input grades into the grade book. This works for students receiving grades of 1% or higher, but does not allow you to enter 0% for students who opened the quiz but did not answer any questions.
Since I needed to show those zeros, I reopened the concluded course and was therefore able to submit grades normally. There was still a problem with entering zeros, but I found that I could use "Fudge Points" to enter a grade of 1 and then regrade using "Fudge points" to bring the grade back to zero.
For the record, I have not idea why this worked or why I thought to try it, but my grades are in!
Hope this helps!
I am having this same issue as well. I am grading the free response questions in a new quiz and hitting update at the bottom when I am done. At the top of Speedgrader, I see Results 100% and at the bottom a final score of 5/5. On the right under Assessment grade 0/0.
I have over 700 students in the class so I really need a process that is automatic and does not involve selecting any more options.
My course has not concluded.....any other workarounds or fixes?
This says "solved," but it is not. I am trying to update some grades at the moment and have the same issue.
The same thing happened to us. A teacher called us, indicating that the scores on the right were not updating even though they were clicking the "Update Score" button. I’m sharing what the situation was and the solution in case it helps others.
At our institution, we use the Term option to "conclude" courses. Initially, the term was set to end on December 17, and students would have access until that date. But when that day came, I received calls from teachers saying their courses were no longer visible and they were still grading final assignments. So, I corrected the Term end date, extending it to December 20, but I left the student access date as December 17 because I didn’t want students to continue having access (you can set different dates).
After that, the teachers could see their courses again, so I thought everything was resolved. However, on December 18, I received a call from a teacher experiencing this error and who was also unable to edit assignment groups.
In the exam, I could update the points for the students' responses, but the score on the right didn’t change.
So, I went to check the Term dates within the course itself and noticed that the end date was still set to December 17, the student access date. I went to the Term section and changed the student date to December 20, which updated the course's end date.
This change allowed me to update the scores in the exams since the course was no longer “concluded.”
Please note that you need to be an admin to access the Term area; teachers don’t have access to this section.
You can find more information about Terms on this page: How do term dates, course dates, and section dates work in Canvas?
Hope this help!
