I am using the peer review choice for an essay assignment. I want my students to give feedback on their peers' essays, but they are only have the ability to leave comments in a comment box. I want them to be able to highlight and drop pins in the assignment. In watching a peer edit video (from the students' perspective) it says that if "Doc Viewer" has been enabled, they will have the ability to do the tasks that I am requiring. However, I can't figure out how to turn that on. Any help???
Hi @CynWinn-Lon,
Is the assignment in discussions, by any chance? So far, speedgrader does not offer docviewer for those assignments. The same thing happens when an assignment is "text entry": no docviewer available for either teachers or students. In fact, I don't think there is an option to turn the docviewer on or off yourself.
The best option is to let the students upload their assignment as a document (pdf, doc, odt) file. I've done this before, and my students have been able to drop pins and highlight in their assigned peer reviews. (Additionally, some of my students now also use it to reply to my feedback pins/highlights if they have additional, specific questions). Make sure to mention it only works in that format, though, because I got quite a few questions about "what happened to the pins" once we started working with peer reviews in discussions 😉
I hope this helps!
Thank you so much for your help. The assignment is not in discussions. It is an assignment, and they have to upload a doc (pdf, doc, etc.)
Oh my gosh! In going over my settings just now, I noticed that I have peer reviews as anonymous. I bet that's the problem!!!!!
Yes, that's it! That was yet another possible setting I had forgotten about. 😅
Pins and highlights are always accompanied by the name of the author (like in a google doc, but without the "anonymous moose" option), so they are unavailable when the "anonymous reviews" box is checked.
🙂👍
