Question types in QTI import file

Hi all,

I’ve been trying to create an import by converting a CSV file to a QTI file so that it creates a classic quiz and so far I’ve managed to have a quiz created with these types of questions:

-Multiple choice (MC)
-Multiple answers (MR)
-True/False (TF)
-Fill in the blanks (FB)

As you know, there are more question types, and I was wondering how those should be named in the import file. See the attached file

@MalouStoop I think it really depends on what process you are using to convert the CSV to a QTI. What is the process you are using?

The YouTube video is SOOO useful! However it only works for Classic Quizzes. Anyone know of a way to do the same process for New Quizzes?

I tried the same process described on the video for New Quizzes, and it failed to import both to item banks and importing to a course using New Quizzes.

I'm unsure if anyone out there is using New Quizzes like we are and I understand the unpopularity of the new engine due to it's underdevelopment. Hopefully as time progresses and more time is dedicated to developing New Quizzes, more users use the New Quizzes platform.

In my experience as a Canvas Admin for my institution, I'd say that in my opinion, New Quizzes is a lot stricter in making sure the QTI file adheres exactly to the specifies standards than Classic Quizzes.  On one hand, it's good to ensure that files adhere to the standard before importing them, but on the other hand it's not a good experience for users when something imports into Classic Quizzes fine but errors out in New Quizzes.

Ultimately, it seems like it's up to the creator of the QTI file to ensure it adheres strictly to the standard, and does not mix and match versions of the standard inside it (something I've seen happen with files form multiple different vendors).  I'm very leery about using ChatGPT or other GenAI services for a task like this, just because they do not generally operate with a strict level of adherence to standards.  You might get something to work, but I don't know that it would work reliable and repeatably.

I hope this info helps, even though it might not be a simple solution.

@chriscas, thank you for the insight. I'll see if there's any kind of AI out there that can be trained to output a strict version of QTI. At least now I know what to look for or what kind of prompt to write.

Hello all, 

I need help please. I'm trying to import quiz questions using the QTI.zip file format. The import runs successfully, however I can't find the quiz bank/questions anywhere on canvas. The first 2 times I ran the import I could find the quiz but the ones I did afterwards is not showing up anywhere. 

Any idea why this is happening?

What I'm I doing wrong?

In the picture you show, I can see that the latest import was not QTI, maybe you made a mistake when you Import, please double check to see if you clicked the File import, not QTI option

Yes that last one was a.zip import that I tested via file upload after I tested the QTI.zip.

If you choose to import as a QTI zip file, then the Quiz should be in your Quizzes menu, and when import, if you check the option to import QTI as a New Quizzes, the Question Group should be in your Item Banks, if you import as Classic Quiz, the question banks should be in your Question Banks

I deleted the quiz banks I created yesterday. I tried again today to import 5 quizzes but only the one of 10 questions is showing under the Quizzes tab. This is for classic quiz not new quiz.
