I have a teacher who sees the following attached image on one student's submission and not on all the others. Has anyone ever evaluated this question before? Does anyone know why this happens? Why does it have a box around it? Why does it grey out? Why does it stand out from the other students? Thanks.

Hi @mmoore1 ...
I am wondering if your student was playing around with font styles in your question? I am not 100% sure or not, but was that question an "Essay" type question? If so, students would be ablet to use the RCE (Rich Content Editor) to change fonts and indicate if some text was "code". In my own testing within my sandbox course, I was able to replicate something similar:
In the RCE, I just highlighted some text that I had typed...then selected "Format" >> "Code" from the menu options available.
Do you think this is what is happening with your student?

I agree that it's definitely text formatted as "code".
@mmoore1, it's basically impossible for any of us in the community here to say WHY the student's answer was formatted as code. Maybe they selected it from the menu, maybe it was copy/pasted from something like a translator app, and I'm sure there are other possibilities. You may want to at least ask the student what they did to get their side of the situation. At least I can confidently assure you this isn't a Canvas system problem or anything.
Hope this info helps!
