Re-using Rubrics - Use this rubric for assignment grading

Scenario:

- a teacher creates an assignment and adds a rubric

- teacher clicks the pencil to edit the rubric and choose the "Use this rubric for assignment grading" box

- teacher creates another assignment and wants to re-use the same rubric but when they choose that rubric the box that says "Use this rubric for assignment grading" does not carry over to the new rubric

- the only option I can see is for the teacher to create a new rubric so they can choose the box for "Use this rubric for assignment grading"

I understand that it really doesn't matter how many rubrics there are because the outcomes are what align in the Learning Mastery Gradebook but our hope is that we can re-use a rubric and maintain the settings so that we don't have multiple rubrics with the same name and content. That is confusing for many teachers.

The instructor does not need to edit the rubric to use it to grade the second assignment. The "Use this rubric for assignment grading" option will remain enabled in the rubric's settings the next time the rubric is used. 

The instructor can add the rubric to the second assignment and use it to grade in the speedgrader.

Rubrics cannot be edited once they have been used for grading.

It takes 12 clicks just to add a rubric to a Discussion post. This is unconscionable. Your solution does not help me. I have added the rubric built with that checkbox enabled "use this rubric for assignment grading" but that setting is not occuring when I go to grade the assignment. I end up having to go back and edit the rubric again after it's inserted. So now here is my ridiculous workflow as I'm adding rubrics to my discussion posts. Why. This is not designed with the user in mind.

Hi @supermarnick ...

Thanks for sharing the video.  Having so many clicks to add a rubric to a discussion isn't ideal...that's for sure.  But, you've pretty much outlined the current workflow that I would use as well.  You had asked why there are those three columns when trying to find your rubric.  The first column contains the list of your courses.  The middle column contains the list of rubrics within the course that you selected, and the right column displays the rubric so that you can review it before inserting it into the graded discussion.  Now, there is a "Canvancement" (Canvas Enhancement) created by @James Jones which might make your searching a *little* easier...at least it has for me: Sorting the Find a Rubric dialog - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com).  This will put the course you are currently working in at the top of the list (in that left-hand column) so that you aren't having to scroll to find it every time.

As for the check-box...  even if you had marked to use it for assignment grading via the "Rubrics" page, you'll still have to re-check it when you actually add it to an assignment or a graded discussion.  I know...it's not ideal.  😕

I am having the exact same problem as the original post describes. I created a rubric and on the first assignment selected "Use this rubric for assignment grading" and it works as expected.

I added the same rubric to a new assignment, I can no longer edit the rubric which means I can no longer select "Use this rubric for assignment grading" but that setting did not "remain enabled" as you stated that it would. When I go to use the rubric on the second assignment, I can click in the rubric but once I finish filling it out and save it the student does not have a score in the gradebook. Attached is a screen shot showing I filled out and saved the rubric but you can see the box where the student score that goes into the gradebook is empty.

PLEASE HELP! It is very annoying to have to do the scores twice.

Hi there, @kzoucha ...

Just to confirm things with you, when you added the same rubric to another assignment in your course, this is what should happen (I'll describe how it worked in my own sandbox course):

1. Navigated to the assignment.
2. Clicked on the + Rubric button to add the same rubric (one that I had already used for another assignment) to this assignment.
3. Clicked on the Find a Rubric link.
4. In the Find Existing Rubric box, navigated to find the rubric I wanted to add to the assignment.
5. Clicked on the Use This Rubric button at the bottom of the Find Existing Rubric window to insert the rubric below the assignment.
6. Clicked on the pencil icon to Edit Rubric.
7. A message pops up on the screen that, in part, indicates you can't edit the rubric.  However, click on the OK button.
8. Click the checkbox option below the rubric for Use this rubric for assignment grading, and then click the Update Rubric button.

If you followed these steps, you should be able to use the rubric within the SpeedGrader, and the total score should populate in that small box shown at the top of your attached screenshot.  I think you don't have the Use this rubric for assignment grading checkbox checked for that assignment.

Thank you for the reply. We tried the suggestion above and as long as we didn't change the rubric, just ticked the box to "Use this rubric for assignment grading" it did work as expected and didn't create a new rubric. We had to click OK on the warning that popped up telling us it would create a new rubric, but it didn't because no settings were changed.
