Hello! For some reason, I am not able to see the separate sections of my course in the People tab. I am able to see all of my students and the sections they are assigned to in one whole group, but the section tab does not appear in the People tab.
Solved! Go to Solution.
Nevermind Chris...I figured it out. I should have created the rubric within the assignment. Also, I couldn't see it because I had the assignments and rubrics hidden from students, and I'm still working on both. I unhid both for a few minutes and could see the option to "find a rubric", where I can select the rubric that I created to go with the assignment. Sorry for the confusion on my part!
@PhillipLuck The Sections tab in the course Settings area is the place to view sections separately.
Thanks for the response, Stimme. Last semester, I was able to see a sections tab at the top of the People page (see screenshot below), but now I am not able to. All I can see now are Groups, but not the individual sections. The same holds true for finding rubrics. I'm sure I did something wrong when creating my classes this semester, but I'm unsure what. I am correctly listed as a Teacher for the course.
Hi @PhillipLuck ...
The "Sections" tab you are looking for would have had to have been manually created by you or another instructor enrolled in the same course. It's not an "out of the box" tab that Canvas provides. The only tab that shows by default on the "People" page is "Everyone". When you add tabs to the "People" page, those are Group Sets. So, for example, you might have a group set with the same name as an assignment name in your course...such as "Written Paper". Then, within that Group Set, you would create groups in the group set. For example, you might have "Green Team", "Blue Team", "Red Team", and "Yellow Team". Then, you assign the people to each of those groups. You could then have a totally different Group Set for a different assignment, create group teams in that Group Set, and assign students to those groups in a completely different way than you did with the first Group Set. The Group Set name and the group names within those Group Sets are totally up to you.
@stimme is correct that "Sections" are found within the course "Settings" page, but if you are looking to set up groups like I've described above, then you'd want to use that instead.
As for rubrics, there should be a "Rubrics" course navigation button on the left-hand side of your course where all your rubrics are located. You can add any rubric from that page to a graded assignment, graded discussion, or a graded quiz.
Does this help at all? Keep us posted...thanks!
Hey Chris...Thanks! I created the sections when I set up the course (see screenshot)
Chris,
I could see the different sections in the people section last semester (see screenshot).
Phillip
@PhillipLuck ...
ok...but again, those technically are not called "sections". What you're showing here, "Fulton Cohort" (which is an interesting name, by the way...as "Fulton" is the name of my housing development), "Online 1", and "Online 2" are called Group Sets...as I described earlier. Here are a handful of Guides about this:
These are only a few select links that I've provided, but there are more links here:
Instructor Guide - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com)
The "Sections" area can be used, for example, when you teach two instances of the same course, and you want to stack them together into one course. Canvas calls this cross-listing, and you can cross-list both of these course sections together into one course so that students from section A and section B, for example are in the same course, yet you as the instructor can still identify what students are in section A and what students are in section B. This is just one example of how course sections can be used.
It might help to understand what the end goal for you is. Are you trying to create groups of students so that they can complete group assignments? So they can have group discussions? Something else entirely?
Looking forward to hearing back from you.
I am teaching one course, but will teach 3 different classes (sections) for the course. Last semester, I taught one class of a cohort of students from the Fulton County School District, and two other classes that were both online, so I called their sections Online 1 and Online 2. Again, it was the same course title, but taught to three different groups of students on different days and times.
Hi @PhillipLuck ...
ok...that makes sense. And using "Sections" via the "Settings" page is the right thing to do ... as @stimme suggested. You can still create Group Sets via the "People" page in your course if you want students to do group work.
@PhillipLuck ...
ok...this helps. Thanks for sharing the screenshot. Looks like you have many students in specific course sections ... all within one course. But, these sections aren't the same as the tabs you can make within your "People" page...since those are Group Sets and not sections.
Thanks! Previously (last semester), when I clicked on "Rubric" there was an option to "select a rubric" where I could select from previously created rubrics. The only option that I see now is to "Create a rubric". There is no option to "select" a rubric so that I can select a previously created rubric. Again, I'm sure I did something wrong when creating the course, but I can't figure out what I did wrong.
@PhillipLuck ...
I do not recall a "Select a Rubric" option within the "Rubrics" page of a course. Might you be thinking of the "+ Rubric" button that appears below the area of a Canvas assignment so that you can attach a rubric to an assignment?
Could it be a permission setting? I am listed as a teacher for the course. Should I be listed as an "Admin" instead?
