Show rubric in Speedgrader by default.

Is there any way to set a default in Speedgrader that would automatically show the rubric for every student?  In other words, when in Speedgrader, a teacher has to click on the Show Rubric button, make selections, and then select save for that student.  When the teacher goes to the next student, the rubric is not showing UNTIL the teacher presses the Show Rubric button.  That is highly annoying if you want to use the rubric for each student (which is why a rubric is created!).

Is there a setting that I cannot find that would always open up the rubric for every student in Speedgrader?

I agree that this is highly annoying. I have hundreds of students in my course and having to do that extra click for each student takes time and adds to my carpel tunnel syndrome.

Instructors have been requesting this feature for at least a couple years now. It's called "speed grader," so having to stop and click is frustrating. Please add an option in settings where the instructor can choose to always display rubric by default for all assignments. Also, the user should not have to widen the area to be able to see the points column, which also slows us down. Please make speed grader a speed grader.  Thanks!

Here is my experience: For the first student, I have to click "Show Rubric." After that, the rubric is automatically displayed for all of the subsequent students in SpeedGrader.

There is a solution that is not built into Canvas.  Rather it is a javascript that has been developed by a long time user of Canvas and forum regular.  So, if you are not opposed to using(or more importantly not restricted from using the script by your institution) a javascript developed by @James then I recommend his quiz-wiz rubrics canvancement.  This script is one of many that he has written and it does exactly what you want - with a little extra bonus of adding a button to click that saves the rubric score and advances to the next student.

If you are using Classic Quizzes, then there are other advantages to using quiz-wiz as well.  The rubrics part works with assignments regardless. 

Here are the links for both his Canvancement GitHub Page and for the Quiz-Wiz Canvancement Information page   Quiz Wiz installation page (you want the rubrics version - click on QuizWizInstallation Scripts and select qw-rubriccs.user.js.  In tampermonkey, the script will show without the install option - you need to click on the raw button to install it. ) 

If you can use the scripts and want to use them, then I highly recommend that you check out some of his other scripts.

That is interesting.  I do not recall seeing that behavior.  I wonder if Canvas has modified that aspect recently.  Of course, I use QuizWiz, so I have seen that behavior for a long time now.  I will have to check the behavior without quizwiz on and see if I get the same behavior.

Ron ( @Ron_Bowman ), I wonder if @SusanNiemeyer is also using QuizWiz? I know it becomes a part of your workflow and sometimes you forget it's not part of Canvas. Some institutions have even installed it globally so people may not realize it's not part of Canvas at all.

I remember people coming into my wife's office and asking about that extra button in SpeedGrader and it took her a while to remember "Oh yeah, you don't have that." Seeing the new "Max" button on the rubric reminded me of how much I've changed the behavior with my scripts.

I just turned off my script and when I save a rubric (instead of save and advance), it does indeed close the rubric. Then when I advance to the next user, the rubric is closed. So the default behavior in Canvas hasn't changed.

I agree! We have some large classes with detailed rubrics so this would save our teachers the extra click and so much time!

I strongly recommend quizwiz rubrics (provided you are allowed to install tampermonkey and use the scripts at your institution).  That script is an unbelievable time saver (and carpal tunnel reducer).  It would be nice if the features of quiz wiz were built into Canvas, but if I can use a work around that integrates seamlessly with Canvas, then I 'll use it.

Have you considered trying out the QuizWiz: Enhancements to SpeedGrader and Quizzes that was designed by @James and mentioned a couple times above by @Ron_Bowman?  I know it can be frustrating to wait for Instructure to develop things in Canvas.  I've been in similar situations with parts of Canvas, but I also realize that Instructure has a budget (like most companies), and as much as we'd like them to develop "all the things", that's just not realistic.

There are a couple things I can point you to:

• Canvas Product Roadmap - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com) -- Here you can get an idea of what Instructure has planned for the future.  This page was recently updated...if I remember correctly.
• Canvas Ideas and Themes - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com) -- Here is where you can begin to create your own idea for enhancements to Canvas.  Then, it can be evaluated by others during the open voting windows.  You can find more information about this at: Community - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com).  I did try to search for existing ideas that were similar to what you had posted back in 2020.  While it's not exactly what you are looking for, it might be of interest to you: [SpeedGrader] Pop-out rubric into its own window f... - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com).  You'll noticed that this particular idea is part of a larger Idea and Theme called Make grading more efficient and effective - Instructure Community (canvaslms.com).  So, I would encourage you to follow both of these links so that you can participate in those conversations when the voting windows open.  Again, use the other links I've provided in this bullet point to see how the voting process works.

Hopefully this information will be of some help to you...even if it's not the exact solution you have been looking for.  Take care...be well.

This is not helpful.  Our tech department has our computers locked down keeping us from installing items.

Besides, why should I have to mess with this?  This is something CANVAS SHOULD TAKE CARE OF.

Going through each student and having to click the "view rubric" is ridiculous.

Thank you for coming back to reply.  I do understand the frustration.  When I worked at a Technical College in Wisconsin, I wans't able to install software on my computer, either.  We had to request software installations through our IT department.  There are some things that I also wish would work smoother in Canvas than they currently do.  Again, though, Instructure (the folks that make Canvas) works with a budget...just like any other company...even though we wish that they could develop everything that we requested.

If any of the links that I provided from my response back in April do not meet your needs, you're more than welcome to create a new idea so that it can be reviewed and evaluated...with potential to have Community members vote on it at some point.  Maybe others here in the Community would like something similar implemented.
