Taking Quiz as Test Student

Is there a way to take a quiz as a test student without publishing the quiz?

I would like to test the quiz prior to assigning it to students, or making it visible for them. But, once I take the quiz as a test student, I am not able to unpublish it. 

Thoughts?

Hi, @BrookeGates! Since Student View is a feature that lets you see the course from a student's perspective, the quiz must be published before you can use it. If you submitted the quiz as the Test Student while in Student View, you can click Reset Student to remove the activity from the records.

If you created a quiz using New Quizzes, you can preview and test it while it's still in Draft status. Please refer to this guide for more information: How do I preview a quiz in New Quizzes?

@ElRabe is correct. However, if you want to test the exam without publishing it for all students, here are a couple of ideas:
1. If you have access to a Sandbox course (or can create one or request one), you can build your Quiz in there, publish it and then once you know it's correct you can copy it over to your actual course.
2. Create a new section and name it 'testing' or something easily identifiable, if possible, and don't assign any students to it. You can then add your student's section to the exam when it's time for them to take it.
3. Require a quiz access code. You can enable a quiz access code so even if it's published, the student still won't be able to take it until they have the access code from you and types it in. Since you would know the access code before hand, you can still access the exam in test student by entering the access code.

Do any of these sound like possible solutions for you?

Thank you so much for your response! I am interested in the access code.

Would the teacher be able to change the access code between periods, so the quiz would show, but the students would need the code to enter. After the period, the teacher could change the code so the students are not able to share the code between class periods?

I am thinking the High School teachers would be interested in this!

Yep, the teachers are able to change the access code as many times as they would like to! The access code can be applied / changed directly in the quiz settings.

adding on to what @NoahBoswell suggested, if the teachers class has students in sections by periods, then I would just set up each period with access to the quiz during their actual class time.

You did not mention anything about how the students are in the course, so I figured I would put the above information out there as well.  For me at a university, I have multiple sections of the same class cross-listed into one course.  that automatically creates the section setup for each course that is in the cross listed course.

In the case of high schools, I do not know if a teacher teaching Algebra I in periods 1,2,5,6 has a separate period designation for each of those periods are if all the students from the 4 periods are in the course.  I would hope that the students are put into the course by period.

Here is the instructors guide page on differentiated assignments.  Basically in the assign to box, delete the everyone tag that comes up by default.  Then the options will show the sections/periods first followed by individual students
