Update Grading scheme at account level (impact - if any - on existing uses in a course)?

Ok have read the guide https://community.canvaslms.com/t5/Instructor-Guide/How-do-I-view-and-manage-grading-schemes-in-a-co... but am looking at an answer to the following that I can't see answered anywhere. I am an admin, and can add/edit grading schemes at acct level.

Looking to make minor changes to an existing grading scheme. If I change/edit the existing grading scheme at the sub-account level, how will this impact on courses that use the scheme? Will it apply to:

  1. All courses (and assignment tasks) with the grading scheme in it - no matter when the course/task was created (seem to think graded tasks using the grading scheme will still retain the old version of the scheme based on some of the notes in the link above specifically "You cannot edit a grading scheme if it has been used to grade student submissions.", but those notes are more related to course level and not sub-account level - and I can edit this grading scheme that has been used to grade students at the sub-account level).
  2. Only new courses (and assignment tasks) created after the grading scheme was edited and updated
  3. All courses with ungraded tasks that use the grading scheme AND any new courses set-up after the scheme was edited and updated.
  4. None of these options (please explain)

Don't think it complicates things, but there's one course level grading scheme we recommend and include in templates, and another task level grading scheme we recommend #vocationaleducationlife. Thanks all!

Hi @andrew_newhouse,

The  How do I add a grading scheme in an account? - Instructure Community - 146  guide covers account level grade schemes, and it has the same note about editing grading schemes, "Once a grading scheme is created for your account, instructors can link the grading scheme to their courses. However, once a grading scheme has been used to assess a student, you cannot edit the grading scheme."  So it seems to me (at least according to documentation), you shouldn't be able to edit a grade scheme if it has already been used for grading by anyone.  I haven't tried this myself as we don't use account level grade schemes at my institution, so do feel free to chime back in if your experience trying this is different than what the guide indicates.

Hope this helps a bit!

-Chris

Thanks @chriscas, been into a bit more and while i can edit the grading scheme at the acct level,  I can only change the overall name of the scheme and not the percentage ranges. Looks like an archive and new scheme seems to be the only option if we proceed.
