Upload of files above 500 K very slow or failing

For about a month upload of any file above I would say 500k to Files or as an attachment to comments on an assignment is taking very long (more than 5-10 minutes) and often fails completely. I have broadband internet connection and download/upload via other means works fine.

That sounds a bit strange for sure!  Have you reached out to Canvas Support to see what they have to say about this issue?  It doesn't sound like normal Canvas behavior for something like what you describe to take so long to upload.
