I am trying to conclude two courses and I am not able to do so. I am the admin and teacher for the course. I also have checked that there is an end date for the course that has passed. From what I can read that is the requirements. The "Conclude Course" button is not present in the settings tab. It was there for two other courses that I concluded.
Any recommendations would be appreciated. Thank you,

Greetings @AndrewMeador ,
Thank you for posting on the Instructure Community!
When it comes to concluding a course manually, you generally shouldn't have any issues doing so, especially if you are an admin of the account the course is associated with. A couple questions I have are:
1) Are you sure you didn't already conclude the course manually?
2) Is it possible that the course concluded automatically via your SIS (Student Information System) that may be connected to your Canvas Instance?
3) If you are only an admin associated with a specific sub-account only, is the course you are trying to conclude associated with the sub-account in which you'd have permission to do so?
I hope this helps a little bit, feel free to reach back out! Always happy to help.
Best,
Noah
Hello,
I had the same issue that @AndrewMeador described in the original post to this thread, and I figured out how to finally conclude some courses for teachers at our school who had no "Conclude this Course" buttons showing in Settings and so had some old tiles from previous years hanging around on their dashboards. We have SIS integration with Canvas, but the course in question were all manually created courses.
In course Settings, I noticed the option to the right of Participation was set to: "Course"
I changed this Participation setting to "Term" and clicked Update Course Details.
Note: Doing this will remove any dates set for the course.
Now look again at the options in the upper right of Course Settings. Hopefully Conclude this Course shows up for you as it did for me!
Good luck!
Sincerely,
Greg

@NoahBoswell - Thank you so much for reaching out so quickly! I appreciate it.
1) I am pretty sure that I have not done so. The course is still in the top of my Dashboard. I am not sure if there is another way to check.
2) I don't have a SIS ID for the course. Is there a way to do so without that?
3) I am a teacher for the course. I am an admin on the account. The course is in the sub-account associated with my courses regardless.
So I believe all of those are in the correct setting for me to be able to conclude the course. Thanks,
Hi @AndrewMeador !
Thanks for reaching back out.
While I don't believe this should be a reason, you by chance aren't enrolled in the course itself with a role that would prohibit you from concluding it, right? Is the role in your course the canvas-provided teacher role, or is it a custom teacher / ta role that you created for your instance? And, you aren't enrolled as a teacher in one section and a student in another section of that course, right?
The only other thing that could come to mind would be any course start and end dates that you have set-up at the course level, or any term dates you have set-up at the account level. Do you by chance have any of these set-up with your account / course?
When a course is concluded, it will automatically be removed from both your dashboard, and the courses slide-out tray. However, you'll still be able to access it from your 'Past Enrollments' via the 'All Courses' page. If you are interested in still moving this course out of your Dashboard / Courses list even though it isn't concluded, you can click on the Courses button via the global navigation bar > All Courses, then you'll see orange stars for all of the courses on your dashboard. If all of the stars are not filled with orange, that means all the courses are visible. You should only star off the ones that you want to see. That said, ensure this course that is supposed to be concluded, doesn't have the star filled in from the courses menu.
@NoahBoswell - I just confirmed that I am a teacher in both of the courses. We haven't created any special roles as far as I am aware.
I checked the dates and the "End" for the COURSE is October 18, 2024. I tried to change the date for the other earlier thinking that would be it and set it to 10/11/2024. That still did not work.
It is in a Term, but there are other courses that are in the same Term that I concluded today. 2 that I could, and 2 that I could not.
@AndrewMeador Strange... I think it's best that you reach out to Canvas Support or your Customer Success Manager for more help, as here in the community, we don't have access to your school's Canvas instance.
I hope with what I provided you helps get you in the right direction, though. Always feel free to reach out with any additional questions or concerns! Always happy to help.
Good luck and all the best!

@NoahBoswell - Is there a definitive way to tell if a course is concluded?
Or is there a way to move a course off the Dashboard? - THIS is my overall goal, but concluding it would be optimal.
Yes, there is a definitive way to determine if a course is concluded. Not only would it appear in your Past Enrollments section of the All Courses list from the courses page on your user account, however at the account-level in the courses list, you'd see a normal check mark (not one inside the green circle) that represents the course being concluded.
You also can't add new students or teachers to concluded courses, so if you try doing so it wouldn't work.
To move the course off of the dashboard, you would need to unfavorite it from your courses list.
@NoahBoswell - If a course is concluded and is still in the Dashboard how does it move out of the dashboard? Or how do I know that it is concluded?
@AndrewMeador I'd also thought I'd provide you with this resource about how the course concluding process works. Hope this helps, too! I think there is some good information on this guide.
Thanks! I appreciate it. I have read this several times over now.
This did not answer my question, and it was not solved.
I ended up submitting a ticket at requested. After waiting for multiple weeks I ended up exporting the grades to an Excel doc and then just deleting the course.
Overall, I there wasn't much support from the Canvas side, and I would not say this issue was solved.
Thanks,
@AndrewMeador It depends on the institution and their requirements.

@greg_marten1 Thank you so much for sharing this, I actually never knew this!

Thank you so much for submitting your response to this! i really appreciate it. I have already solved this by deleting the course altogether. I will keep this in mind if it happens again! I appreciate it.
