change one question from existing quizzes set to an extra credit question

Hey everyone

I have a set of 18 quizzes that use 3 question banks. I have set it to pull 5-10 questions from first 2 banks, and then pull 1-2 from the 3rd bank. 

I would like to change the 3rd bank questions into extra credit questions. It doesn't seem like there is an automatic way of doing this. They all seem to suggest changing the points to 0 and then manually add the points upon inspecting the results. 

Or they suggest changing the rubric and then manually entering the fudge points. 

Is there a way to automatically change 1-2 questions into extra credit questions? So if they get it right, they get the points even if it exceed the total possible, but if they don't get it, they won't be penalized for it.

Unfortunately I do not know of a way to create a quiz with extra credit questions that is graded automatically (or where you don't have to do some extra work to get the points).  I really thought that New Quizzes had that problem solved when I saw you can make the quiz worth say 10 points and have 12 points worth of questions.  Then I found out that it scores the quiz 12 out of 12 to get 10 and then scales 11/12 to 9.2

For what it is worth what I do (this works with weighted assignment groups only) is create a 0% assignment group for extra credit quizzes - or in your case just your quizzes.  Then I have the actual assignment group with the quizzes.  The students take the quiz and get the score they earned on it, and this quiz is in the 0% weighted group.  I then create an assignment in the actual quiz group for that quiz and make it worth the score I want (say 10 points where the quiz may be 12).  I then have to export the gradebook, copy the grades over and import the gradebook.  It seems like a lot more work than it actually is, but in reality, I should not have to do it that way.  I would hope that the ability to create extra credit questions on a quiz is on the roadmap to product improvement

It seems like they're taking two quizzes in a row that way: the regular quiz and the 0% quiz. I just made the extra hard question worth much less that the others. So even if they were to get it wrong, they can still get an A. 

In my case, 10 key terms questions are worth 0.08 points. 6 review points are 1.5 points and the extra hard question is worth 0.2 points. So if they were to get everything right except the hard question, they still get a 9.8 out of 10.

to a degree you are correct.  You just have to explain it to the students - in the class and also with the quiz and assignment instructions.

So in the 0% group - any quiz I put there has in the instructions that the quiz points for the quiz will be transferred over to an assignment in the weighted group and that is where the points will count.

in the weighted group, you create an assignment (not a quiz) that has nothing in it but information stating that the grade shown here is for quiz #5 and your score for this assignment is X/Y where X is the score you got on the quiz and Y are the points the quiz will actually be out of.

To avoid confusion about 2 quiz scores, don't publish the assignment until after the quiz has closed - Plus I would make the grades on the quiz manual and therefore hidden until you post them.
