As far as how to participate, you need to ask your instructor.  It is likely your instructor has already posted instructions or a guide as to what is expected in discussion responses.  Perhaps in the first discussion post, the syllabus, or maybe a rubric has been posted. 

As far as how to use discussions in Canvas, you should review these tutorial pages.

I agree with @gnoack.  I would also suggest that you review one of these short tutorial videos...depending on your role within the course:

• Discussions Overview (Instructors)
• Discussions Overview (Students)
